Author: Kashmanik
Subject: Very rough outline of Ep10. - useful if later writers could read this.
OK, I'm planning to kick start a Dawn arc in this episode.
I got thinking - remember Willow's ball of sunshine spell that she was working on in S5 as a gift to Buffy? Well what if Tara had kept working on it secretly to surprise Willow. Tara could have had a breakthrough during their time apart in S6, and never got round to telling Willow.
BUT, Dawn reads about Tara's research in the Book of Shadows, and finds out that Tara was never able to cast the spell, as it took too much energy. But since Dawn is basically made up of energy, she can.
In my ep Dawn discovers this - and she basically wipes out dozens of vampires in a single night by creating the artificial sunlight. BIG ego-boost for Dawn. But I'm thinking that in later episodes writers could keep dropping in bits about how Dawn is getting more and more cocky about her power.
Anyway, my episode will start with the Scoobs fighting some kinda demon - the ep will start right in the thick of the action. The demon has come to Sunnydale to deliver something to Raven, and the Scoobs have intercepted it. But the demon goes tearing out of town with the package, so Buffy, Willow, Spike, Faith, Kennedy and Xander go after it. They need all the firepower they can get to take it down.
So it's just Giles, Anya, Dawn and Andrew left in town. Dawn discovers the sunlight thing, yada yada yada. Goes patrolling etc. But one night sees a demon lurking in a tree. Tries to attack it, but it escapes.
The four do some research, and find out that it's a Yara-ma-ya-who (see my post in the archives - this is a genuine demon from an Aboriginal folk tale). Giles will comment that it's impossible for a yara-ma-ya-who to be active at night - it only ever moves during the day, as it requires sunlight to feed on. Dawn feels guilty that her spells have drawn it into town.
Anyway, the ep will progress where Dawn goes after the Yara-ma alone, only to be eaten by it. (Again, read the post I made, and this'll all make sense.) So it's up to Giles to rescue her.
This ep is really gonna focus on Giles and Dawn developing an even stronger father-daughter relationship.
Obviously (and *hopefully*) the ep will be much better than the description I gave, but there you go.
Oh, and the group who went after the demon will return with this artifact, an old fashioned pocketwatch with an engraving of a serpent coiled around the clockface. Willow seems very subdued at the end of the ep, but no one notices. (Just thought I'd sneak that in to foreshadow Proserpexa, and it could even come back in the final episodes as something Proserpexa needs to perform her spell. The watch could have belonged to a member of her Cult.)
Still needs work, but there it is, more or less. :-)

Was a bit dubious when I first started reading, but I really like the idea of Dawn's artificial sunlight bringing in the demon (as long as it's handled correctly and explains why it doesn't just turn up in the day)
But if you're going to have Dawn getting cocky with the power PLEASE have her back on track by the end of the ep. I got the feeling this is what you were getting at, but I definatly think we don't need another dark witch storyline.

No Dark witchy-ness! -- Kashmanik, 00:24:51 04/09/03 Wed
Wholeheartedly agree that would be an awful mistake. Actually, I was hoping other writers could agree with me that we'll keep Dawn *extremely* limited in her magical abilities. The sunlight spell, and maybe one or two other things as the need arises, but I think we should only use Witch-Dawn on very rare occassions.
I just think it's a nice set-up for the finale, where one of the ideas put forward is that Dawn has to travel between different time periods of Sunnydale to get help. If we've given her a little magic experience and a little combat training this season, it'd make the finale more plausible.

I do think Dawn would be wiser with her power -- Linda_Delurked, 20:21:58 04/08/03 Tue
Kash, I ~love~ the sunshine idea, and the idea that Dawn's energy fuels her magic. It could make her very formidable.
I don't think she'd get cocky with her power though, as it's just not like her. She's been on the sidelines her whole life, so she'd probably relish the limelight a good bit, but she's seen what power has done to Willow, and to Buffy all her life. Plus she has made cocky mistakes in the past (like when she ran off to help Amanda in 'Potential' because she thought she could handle it) so she's less likely to in season 8.
If we could twist the story just a little, I think that it's far more likely that Dawn would push herself too hard, constantly trying to help the gang and save lives. We could find out that it's because she's still afraid that the Key was only created to destroy, and she wants to be able to help people instead. That would be much more Dawn-ish, I think.
I am *so* looking forward to the episode! And thanks for your summary, as it gives me a starting point for episode 11!

I'll email you Ep8, since you said the link wasn't working for you. :-) -- Kashmanik, 00:15:01 04/09/03 Wed
Maybe I didn't phrase it too well... I don't think Dawn would become too rash with her power, just that she'd go on patrol a few times. More to prove to *herself* that she's powerful than to anyone else. I just think that after being kept away from patrolling for so long, and then not being needed because Faith and Kennedy are around, Dawn would try to draw a little attention her way.

Updated - writers of 7, 8 and 9 please read. :-) -- Kashmanik, 11:38:57 04/10/03 Thu
If no one's planning to do it before me, I'm going to include a major scene between Dawn and Giles about the events in "The Gift".
It's all going to get very tense, Anya will be really angry with Giles and *almost* blurt out that his idea was to kill Dawn to stop Glory. Turns into a massive argument, Giles throwing his mug at the wall, etc. Anya storming out, and then big confrontation between Dawn and Giles. Don't worry, they're all gonna be friends again by the end of the ep, but things are gonna be very tense for a while.
I've also got some ideas for the Scoobs chasing the demon - Buffy, Faith, Willow, Xander, Kennedy and Spike are gonna be crammed into a convertible. All we'll see of their scenes is when Willow is on the cellphone to Dawn. Willow's gonna say how Faith is driving, and that it was less scary when she was just trying to kill them with knives. Dawn'll ask where Spike is; isn't it light by now? Willow says they had to put him in the boot. Whispers that he's getting a little cranky, which sets Spike off on a torrent of abuse against Willow.
Anyway, should be funnier when it's written. :-)
Just wanted to let writers know that I'll be dealing with Giles killing Ben in my episode, as well as a little Proserpexa foreshadowing.

How do you want me to handle episode 11? -- Linda_Delurked, 13:00:26 04/10/03 Thu
Should Proserpexa be named in the episode? Will Willow be researching her secretly? Or do you want to keep her completely under wraps?

Well what I had planned..... -- Kashmanik, 13:45:36 04/10/03 Thu
At the end, the group who've been pursuing the demon will return to town with the package that was destined for Raven. It turns out to be a very ornate box, with some kind of magical seal. The gang leave it with Willow at the Magic Box for her to try and break through the seal, and she succeeds, lifting out a gold pocketwatch. She's sort of smiling and curious at first, but then looks at the back and drops the watch in horror. The last shot of the episode is of the watch falling to the floor, and we see that it has an engraved serpent on the back and a rune in the center.
So in your ep could Willow perhaps be covertly researching the rune? I was thinking maybe Willow could tell everyone the box was empty, but then again, that would make it totally obvious that the watch is connected to Proserpexa. What do you think?

Another important note for 7, 8, and 9. -- Kashmanik, 00:41:14 04/11/03 Fri
If at all possible could you all include some nice scenes between Dawn and Giles - it's just kinda important for my ep that there's a stronger emotional link between them. Growing more father-daughtery, if you see what I mean.
If you could do that, it'd be great! Hopefully the payoff in my ep will be worth it! :-)

Episode 9 is just *not* happening for me just yet... -- Wyvern, 17:38:11 04/11/03 Fri
I mean, normally I'm a lean, mean fic-writing machine... but this is just not coming together. I think it was definitely a good move for me to not be writing an arc story because I've kind of fallen out of the arc a little recently (been too busy to spend a lot of time online)... but I don't know. I think the combination of characters I've been asked to focus on is a bit of a stumper; Kennedy, Andrew and Dawn. It's nothing I can't handle, but it might not come together on time. Just so as you know. Is it really essential for me to focus on all three of them? They don't make natural bedfellows, but to have three equally dominant plot-threads running seperately might be a bit much. So what I need to know, is can I reduce the significance of one of them? I'm not sure which one as yet, but unless this story clicks into place pretty soon I'm going to start again.

Doesn't necessarily need to be three plots..... -- Kashmanik, 20:38:06 04/12/03 Sat
Just one plot where those three are the main characters. :-)

See, that was where I was having the problem... -- Wyvern, 21:22:09 04/12/03 Sat
Kennedy doesn't sit right with Andrew and Dawn. I just can't get the dynamic right. So I can get that into two threads... but that still leaves everybody else. They need a little bit of a plot too.
But it doesn't matter. I think I've cracked it. And the episode seems to be primarily Kennedy centric now, with Andrew and Dawn the main supporting characters. Thank god it's not an arc story...
