Subject: Some info on the horsemen

I've been doing a bit of reading into the horsemen and have come up with the following. I've also got an idea should anyone fancy Oz returning for an episode. Bear in mind that there are four horsemen so it might be an idea to deal with them over four episodes.

Horsey history

After taking the scroll from God and being worshipped by all creation (in chapter 5) the Lamb (Jesus, the Lamb of God) now opens the seven seals of the scroll to reveal its contents. The seals as with the trumpets are in a group of four, two and one. The opening of the first four seals reveal the four horsemen of the Apocalypse. The opening of the first four seals is introduced by each of the four living creatures in turn. Each one of the four living creatures reveals a horseman,
the first three horsemen are summed up by the fourth horsemen,

'They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine and plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth'. These are popularly known as the four horsemen of the Apocalypse.

The power of these horsemen is limited to a quarter, with the trumpets later it is limited to a third. The fifth seal reveals those who had been slain because of the word of God and their testimony, that is the persecuted church. The sixth seal reveals the day of the Lord, which brings the Lamb's wrath to those on the earth. The opening of the seventh seal reveals silence. The seven seals sum up human history from the viewpoint of heaven and the church. There is war, famine and pestilence in general and on the church in particular there is persecution, then the end will come bringing terror to the world, this probably accounts for the silence of the seventh seal.

Horsey Descriptions

(Rev 6:1-8 NIV) I watched as the Lamb opened the first of the seven seals. Then I heard one of the four living creatures say in a voice like thunder, "Come!" {2} I looked, and there before me was a white horse! Its rider held a bow, and he was given a crown, and he rode out as a conqueror bent on conquest.

{3} When the Lamb opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature say, "Come!" {4} Then another horse came out, a fiery red one. Its rider was given power to take peace from the earth and to make men slay each other. To him was given a large sword.

{5} When the Lamb opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, "Come!" I looked, and there before me was a black horse! Its rider was holding a pair of scales in his hand. {6} Then I heard what sounded like a voice among the four living creatures, saying, "A quart of wheat for a day's wages, and three quarts of barley for a day's wages, and do not damage the oil and the wine!"

{7} When the Lamb opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature say, "Come!" {8} I looked, and there before me was a pale horse! Its rider was named Death, and Hades was following close behind him. They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine and plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth.

I think a good way to deal with this possibly would be to have the horsemen attempt to deal with the Scoobies in their own way.

The first for example could be all about the fight - with Buffy and Faith joining forces against him.

The second could be more about mentally pitting the scoobies against each other. Fighting amongst themselves and finally realising why it was happening with their research. This could also be the episode where all the secrets come out allowing them to move on towards winning the battle. Turning point ahoy!

The third episode could have a more business-like methodology to it. The thrid horseman had the power of famine and therefore could effect the scoobies and sunnydale by causing a food shortage - or somehow managing to make the scoobies loose their jobs and houses or something along those lines. This horseman could be symbolized by a politician or a lawyer or a powerful body of that nature.

The fourth horseman is pretty much the power of death. The image of beasts of the earth brings the idea of man's inner beasts to me, and could be a good idea in bringing in werewolves into it. Drawing all the humans with beast nature to Sunnydale - imagine Buffy fighting an army of werewolves.

I think that trying to deal with them all over one episode is a lot to handle. Obviously my ideas are purely straight from the text but they can always be bent to fit the situation more.

...one of the sources for the Horsemen story in a previous faith from the middle east. I've also made a few suggestions for expanding the mythology beyond the Book of Revelation. It is an interesting concept in itself and I like the fact that you have picked up on the fact that there is more to them than simply "Death, Famine, War and Pestilence".

Having said that, I find the whole idea of using the Horsemen "off the shelf" far too Christian for my blood, but that's just my personal feeling and it shouldn't stop people because they seem to like the concept, after all. I just hope that the writers of eps 10 - 14 are actually reading this kind of post and getting an understanding of what it is that the characters are about. But your ideas of the battles being too much for one story is fine, because we've got a four-or-five episode mini-arc in which we could easily have them introduced in one story and the following four showing a different "horseman" dealing with the Scoobies. Or alternatively, we could have four episodes shoe non-conclusive battles with a single "horseman" followed by one where all four are together wnd there's a BIG battle!

Then again, what do my ideas matter? I'm writing my episode before all this kicks off *g*
