Ellen, what a juicy question! I would suggest that only you can find out what is the best way for you, by trying everything with your fiercest intention! For me, i found several things to be necessary. First, tanking up on transmission from any of the teachers i could get next to, as often as i could, and taking in that transmission in a whole-body kind of drinking it up. then, there was the necessity to discover/create my most effective manner of enquiry. I asked myself often similar questions to the one Saniel used, 'what is it that is aware of everything arising?' (I may have slightly misquoted here...) Once I had even the slightest glimmer of locating, or experiencing, or feeling, or noticing, something in my experience that fit that description, I was on it like a hawk to observe all I could about it before it faded back into the more usual self-sensing of "me." In various kinds of experience as my life proceeded, I would remember to ask myself 'where is Consciousness in this experience?' Even though i was isolated at this stage, and going through the death of my father and all the attendant emotional demands that made on me, this remained my theme in a basic sense, and I worked with Linda throughout, and she helped me keep it on track by reflecting to me how Consciousness was present in all that i was experiencing. She would ask me, "what in that was different from before?" or, "what in that did not change?" and sometimes she would say, after I had replied, "That is Consciousness!" This helped me stabilize that intuition. i also practiced Listening by reading over and over The Conscious principle, and chapter 10 in White Hot Yoga, esp. the essay "Cool it with me for a moment in the great sitting room of Consciousness."
I thank you for asking...it's good for me to remember.
