Hi,
Here's my two bits on the subject. I used to do career counseling for a living. Beyond providing fundamental information and reflection on careers, the Mystery has to kick in to really provide a true foundation beyond the classic career development paradigm of analytically discovering your basic needs, values, life-styles, money needs, work styles, temperaments, behaviors, etc. which are considered essential constituents of career decision-making. It all sounds so ridiculously "heady" eh? It's the typical "helping" business most career counselors are involved in, i.e. gather information internally and externally, figure out what you want, visualize what it's supposed to look like, and then strategize how you're going to get from here to there - whatever "there" is. Reflecting back on this approach makes my stomach a bit queasy. Pass the Rolaids.
If you feel so inclined, experiment around with what follows, and see if it turns out to be worthwhile:
Sit quietly and when you're ready, allow yourself whole bodily to encompass or hold the entire topic of "my life's work" (whatever that is for you; however you see/feel/think/intuit it), and effortlessly and gently drop all of it directly into your Heart - without the slightest desire whatsoever of reconciling contradictions, or having any expectations that anything in particular will happen. That is, totally hold what you already know about the inherent confusion of the mind concerning this topic (which is neither bad or good), and remain consistent to the paradoxical inconsistency that both fully transcends the mind and yet fully honors and includes it for what it is, and what it is not.
When you feel you have "dropped", surrendered, or released "my life's work" deep into the Heart, you will find after a bit of time that thoughts move more toward the surface again. When you perceive this happening, then again very gently pick up the thought/feeling/intuition "my life's work" whole bodily, and once again delicately drop it into your Heart, as if it was riding on a feather floating deep into infinity. Keep repeating this all-holding, all-dropping cycle in an easeful, gentle, effortless manner for about ten minutes.
After ten minutes (or less if you want) rest easily and then continue into activity. As "you" gently drop "my life's work" into the depths of the Heart, absolutely trust it to reveal what must be revealed to you at this time. It may "appear" like something, or possibly nothing. In either case, it gives what it gives, nothing more, nothing less. And all of it is absolutely O.K. See this not as a technique or process, but rather as a gentle and effortless allowing; a slipping into the mysterious waters of your own Heart. Let it murmur to you and whisper from your Heart what it must. Listen to what YOU are saying to yourself from HERE and see what arises. Have fun with it.
All Love, Crazy John
