Dog attack survivor calling for pit bull ban

The Associated Press
8/25/03 9:38 AM

DETROIT (AP) -- Brian Johnson will never forget the day he was attacked by a pair of pit bulls.

"It was frightening," the 13-year-old said of the April 2001 attack. "I was trying to hold them between my legs and then stop one so I could focus on the other one. I was just trying my best to survive."

Johnson's lawyer and his family now are pushing for a state ban on pit bulls. Southfield attorney Arnold Reed planned to meet Monday with state Sen. Samuel "Buzz" Thomas, D-Detroit, to talk about the idea.

"We are talking about a vicious animal that was born and bred for violence and fighting," Reed told The Detroit News for a Monday story.

The proposal faces strong opposition from pit bull owners, who say the ban would unfairly target one breed.

Richard Tuttle Jr. of Macomb County's Macomb Township said he trusts his 4-year-old pit bull with his two young children. He said the owners of any breed of dog must make sure they handle them properly.

"It comes down to the responsibility of the owner such as keeping the dog on a leash and on its own property," the 35-year-old automotive engineer said.

Sean Nowicki, 30, a preveterinary student at Oakland University, said it would be difficult to enforce such a ban because of the broad definition of what a pit bull is. Many of the dogs that have attacked people are cross breeds, he said.

Several Michigan communities, such as Oakland County's Waterford Township, have enacted local pit bull bans. That township's law calls for a $500 fine and a 90-day jail sentence for residents caught with one of the dogs.

"We had everything from complete approval to complete outrage," township clerk Betty Fortino said.
