Subject: 1999 Pontiac Headlight Adjusters

My young friend told me he could adjust the headlight on my Grand Am. There are two bolts that you turn to adjust the light assembly and somehow he managed to get them completely out of whack - you can't adjust the headlight one way or the other and the bolts you turn to take up the slack won't take up the slack. The assembly is out about an inch further than it should be. Is there anything I (or he) can do to get the slack taken up so the adjusters work again, short of taking it to the shop? Thanks in advance for any help on this...
