Someone posed the question to me at practice the other night, as to my feelings on foregin athletes competing at the Canadian championships. I think this might be something athletics canada is toying with, or already may be in place due to some agreement with central american/caribean countires or something. I do know a guy from the bahamas finished right behind me at Nationals XC, so it must already go on. Anyhow, I said I wouldn't mind at all if foreign athletes competed. I think the stipulation given was that they didnt score/or take medals etc, and couldn't bump Canucks out of the final. This would limit their participation in the sprint events, but in the distance events I definitly think it would help. Foreign athletes might add depth and volume to our national meets and allow Canadians to be pulled along, or raced to faster times. Maybe it would take away some of the sit and kick from these races and give the top notch guys like hood, sullivan, bourgeious, whitmarsh, sheibler, kaley etc., who dominate year in and year out someone to race a little closer. I haven't put a great deal of thought into it or thoyught about keeping our championships "Pure" but thats my first reaction. I know foreigners used to be able to run in the US championships, but no longer are, and there seems to be a lot off anti foreigner sentiment going on in the US right now. What do you guys think?
