Subject: Continuing my quest of an alternative final villain/monster, suppose
Thinking of the 2nd book in "The Sword of Shannara" series, where the demons who are kept out of the earth by a magical forbidding (pulling a blank on the title) but the forbidding weakens because the chosen elf (who became a tree) is dying and a new elf must go on a quest to become the new "chosen" tree, several demons escape the forbidding trying to kill all the chosen elves including one who, is like the First Evil a Shapeshifter - but differing in that it is corporeal.
So relating this to the Buffyverse, what if Buffy faced - instead of a Hellmouth with ubervamps, the opening of the Hellmouth led to all the demons being freed into this dimension (sort of like the Gift)and some of these had escaped earlier. The Shapeshifter in this book, quietly assumes a shape until it can sneakily kill. There are two other demons - one who rips & kills messily and another one.
So if the First just assumed someones role (such as Giles as we were red herringed to think) until he could get her alone and try to kill her. Or kill Spike. Or whoever. And not try to overpower her but quietly poison her or shoot her. And instead of the seemingly ineffective ubervamps (well I know they did kill some of the SITs & first Ubie was a tough one) and they were killing innocents including SITs - what would Buffy do? Could Willow open a portal? Should Willow have opened a portal such as she did when she sent the troll to the troll dimension?
I find the parellels between the chosen elf not wanting to be chosen and fighting her destinny & Spike's journey of redemption fascinating. Both the chosen elf & Spike seemingly die. But my point - I did have one when I started this is that facing an evil who went about his shapeshifting quietly and deadly & a demon who could kill quickly & effectively such as the Terminator,
would Buffy still have chosen to empower the SITs? Could she have actually saved the world? Just summer musings to free flow on a boring afternoon.

I don't thik she would've pwered up the SIT rangers against a shape-shifter or the terminator. I think she tends to go with different ways for different things but I do think Willow would've still been needed for a s pell of some sorts

I think Willow would have been needed to reinforce the forbidding or open a portal but I don't think the SITs would have even been part of the story then. They would have been just cannon fodder (well I guess most of them were) against a demon who could rip them apart like they were nothing.

I have never read that book Pixi, but the thought of a shapeshifter that able to actually kill instead of talk you into a coma! That would have been a very inventive big bad, and I agree with Gemma, she probably wouldn't have en-powered all the other SIT's. But the solution probably still would have been a huge Willow spell!! were replaced, acted the part, said all the right things and then when they got Buffy or Spike alone just killed them. Like that. I don't want Spike to die but if ME was going to have him die, then Giles actually being the FE (a corporeal FE) can you imagine the drama when Buffy discovers the fact or battles with Giles for her life? It would explain the difference in Giles behavior and be a great, battle.
Please - this is not a bash Giles thread. This is off the cuff, weirdo speculation comparing Buffy to The Sword of Shannara series. Please nobody take this seriously.
Or if it was Xander - some of the eirie moments of his foreknowledge could lead to his quiet killing. Or attempted killing and the realization that this isn't Xander. I'm not talking about a character going bad like Willow but the sudden realization that your friend was killed long ago and this is something else trying to kill you. How intense would that be?

Would be quite the battle too, and hard for Buffy as she is emotional person. I understand your thread and I know your not trying to bash Giles, just a fun what if thread!!
How about if it had taken Dawn's shape and then Buffy had to kill her in the end, and I think back how she threatened them in season five at the end about NOT killing Dawn!!
This is fun!
