I think this, especially when young writers do it, is another sign of the author having very little confidence in their own ability to tell a story. They have to make their audience like Mary Sue, and they're scared that if they give her any flaws, we won't. The fact that most of their readers like the flawed and interesting canon characters doesn't really register.
