After reading sonnet 73 I feel that Shakespeare's word choice refers to the fact that winter is a season of death. A time when things are lost but in that loss make you stronger. We know that Shakespeare's son, Hamlet, died as a child. Possibly the time of winter and night could signify that time when Shakespeare was grieving for his son. Also, the season after winter, spring, is a time of rebirth and love. Much like when a person finishes grieving for a loss and continues to live one's life after.
