Shakespeare's diction conveys the season through imagery. You can actually see in your mind's eye the tree shivering in the wintery cold. And also, the fact that all the birds have flown south for the winter, and their song is missed.

Time and season on significant because winter is like the dying of the earth. Everything sleeps, and is cold in the winter. Shakespeare is talking about the youth on his death bed. As though he is on the brink of winter. So, the season helps you see the gloom of the occasion.
