The June wind outside had managed to blow in a gentle storm. Though the thunder was heavy, the clouds lacked the charge to deposit forked lights towards earth. The air was crisp and smelled like the promise of summer rain. Often times through winter, Zeth forgot that smell. But each summer it was there again reminding him of a happier time and gentler place. He recalled picnics in the parks with ex girlfriends where they raced green sturdy leaf ships under old covered bridges. He remembered sitting in the grass and remembering how cool it felt despite the sun that shined on it. As he mused, his hand rested at the curve of his neck and shoulder. His own skin could be compared to that likeness; cold to the touch no matter how warm the area surrounding. It was this type of comparison that seemed to make his life bearable these days.

As the horrid mix media art fell to the ground with a muffled thud, he fell onto the couch’s smooth surface. The leather dimpled slightly under his weight and stretched in some areas to stay with the cushion. He kicked off his dress shoes with the toes of his opposite feet. He smirked at the white socks revealed. No, it wasn’t professional to wear white socks with black slacks and shoes- but who cared? No one was watching him anyway.

He’s spent that last year in Europe, admiring the way no one second glanced at him. That’s because no body knew who he was. But it’d only taken him a year to realize that he missed that. He wanted to be known. He wanted to be feared. And so what if it came with having to deal with a deceased wife, a devoicing wife, their body swapping, and a father that prided himself on embarrassing Zeth. At least there was some respect involved. To better illustrate my point, enter exhibit A: Algaia. Not even in town two days and someone was already looking for him. It felt good to be wanted.

As Algaia’s vocals splashed, so did Zeth’s sense of awareness. The thick walls and distance clouded the woman’s voice to just noise. But because of his background and breeding, he knew she wasn’t a threat. Though he wasn’t sure who approached, he knew no harm could come of it. So he issued back his own line.

“I’m in here, darling.” So long as it wasn’t the ghost of Brillian, he was just dandy.
