She was off center from him when the movement caused her thick neck to rocket upwards. Her tail lashed against her black stockings and her mouth of grass paused in mid-chew. Her entire body had become a beacon of alertness. She didn’t move hide or hair again for several minutes. She watched the stallion with some hesitation before swinging her head around to scope of that herd mare. Maybe this was her mate? Hell if she knew. But she wasn’t much up for asking for trouble from a stallion. Mares only got one sort of trouble from stallions and it was usually the 340 day hassle kind that resulted in an utter tugging foal. Mercedes was young and had just reached the breed able age…but she wasn’t really looking forward to carting around any extra weight.

The day was young and Mercedes has managed to graze farther away from the herd than was smart. She hadn’t made a move to welcome the stallion, but she was sure her gray dabble coat was a stark enough contrast from the yellowing grass to get her noticed. She let out the slightest of neighs, calling more for her herd than for the stranger. But with her declaration given, she moved forward. Her eyes never left his frame after that. She studied the line of his body and the stance that he took. “Hello.” She kept her distance but being rude wasn’t necessarily an insurance policy.
