I know John Sexton since the 1960s, and he is a remarkable guy, one of the smartest Fordham has ever turned out. While attending Fordham, he coached national champion speech and debate teams at St. Brendan's HS in Brooklyn. I think you made a very good point, and it is extremely encuoraging to see one of our alums doing so well, and running one of our rival schools(In terms of student recruitment), but I still would not want him as my speaker at Graduation. He may be extremely successful, but he does not have the name appeal. There is a good bit of bragging rights when you talk to you friends from other schools about who your schools speaker is.     - Don't you think the students should have the forum to suggest or approve of their very own keynote speaker? Another view I have heard from a few students here, that I do not necessarilly agree with, is that after four years of college and the countless hours of work and class, why are we getting a speech from another academic. The other day on campus (a month or two ago), I was able to walk over and listen to a speech given by Bishop Desmond Tutu. I have had a lecture given by Dr. George F. Bass, who pioneered the field of underwater archaeology and discovered the million-piece glass puzzle. Considering how lucky I was to have these opporunities, I expected the world for Commencement.
