Well, there definitely is something to be said for the "intangibility" of an actor that makes him/her engage the audience in a certain way.
I have often struggled with this aspect of actors or even just people in life. Sometimes there are just people who rub you the wrong way for whatever reason...you just don't like them. And it's not because they did anything to you necessarily.
With actors, there is a likability factor and everyone has a different radar.

Personally I would still analyze her performance more closely because I believe that likability or how engaged you are as a viewer isn't simply an intangible quality necessarily.

For example I could easily see someone saying, "I didn;t buy Susan Sarandon as a villain because she tried to indicate too much. She tried to show me how evil she was rather than just going after what she wants. She never let me show how vested she was in destroying the Atreides. I didn't feel that she conveyed her jealousy of Irulan too well. Also, I felt that she was showing me too much that she enjoyed being evil rather than just enjoying it. She was playing 'villain' too much rather than the truth of her character."
I could totally buy that as an argument. No one has given it yet though.
