Just a few minutes ago, I thought of something that I hadn't considered before from House Atreides.

If you remember, the Tleilaxu began their invasion with a Face Dancer infiltration into the suboid population. Leto discovered a problem (but without knowing face dancers were involved) and tried to warn the Earl. That very same day, the revolution began.

The new idea that came to my mind is this: What if the face dancers let Leto escape on purpose? They act like they're trying to catch him, but only to make him think that's what they want to do. What they really want to do is make sure that he warns the family of the impending problem so that they have a way of escape.

It does seem a remarkable coincidence that Leto happened to discover them when he did. They had probably been there for weeks, waiting for some way to make the Vernius family responsible for their own demise.

I guess there's no way to determine if this was the real intent of the authors and I tend to think that they wouldn't neglect to mention such a point, as subtlety doesn't seem like their strong point, but it's better to assume the best, rather than the worst. With this in mind, most of my problem has to do with the style, which I feel is vastly inferior to the original Dune style.

As to the question of canon, I feel that each reader must decide for herself whether or not she will consider them canon.
