I had always invisioned for the early Dune universe that humanity literally crawled it's way through the space to other worlds. And I mean really slow, like multigenerational ships or cryosleep. And then one day we came across Dune and discovered spice and then the rest is history. But in the B.Jihad it is apparent that faster than light travel had already been achieved. And it is quite a bit faster than light.

In the B.Jihad, humans are taking weeks and months to get to other worlds without the Holtzman drive. This is already very fast. I don't think they ever leave the galaxy though.

But can you see how this weakens the grandure of spice? The empire was already quite big without it and people were traveling between worlds fast enough anyway. Sure instant travel is great but I had always seen it as a bigger deal.

I mean, in the latter books even smugglers use the guild for travel. But why not just use thier own faster than light ships but slower than Guild ships and not have to pay the guild for coverup and travel? Any ideas?
