Yeah, I think my point is quick space travel was NOT possible. It's quick from our perspective, but not so quick from the perspective of the spice-powered navigators of the classic novels. It took people months to get from Salusa Secundus to Giedi Prime in the Butlerian Jihad novel. Whereas in the classic novels, travel between planets was instantaneous which is a whole lot faster.
Again, that's like the difference between a sail boat and a high speed jet.

Instantaneous travel allows for there to be an imperium as no one would be able to exert that much control over such a huge area for such a long period of time without instantaneous travel and communication. Also it allows for humans to spread far beyond the reaches of previously known space if they can travel anywhere instantly rather than waiting months or possibly years to get anywhere.

Ok so if we want to use the allegory of oil, spice is like the fuel that we use to power a jet engine. Oil is still damn valueable even though we could probably still get somewhere by using a sailboat instead. So I don't think the power of the Spice is being understated becasue of the "sailboat travel" in the Legends of Dune novels, because once the discover the spice, it's like oil for a jet engine...much much faster.
