Unfortunately, I have to agree about the current trilogy of prequels being a disappointment so far. I very much enjoyed the first trilogy, but I hope that this one improves with the next book. First of all, I think the difference in writing styles between BA and BH makes for very stilted reading and bad transitions. This seemed extra noticeable in BJ. I also have to agree that BJ reads like a StarWars novel (and hmm, gee, thats funny, KA is a StarWars writer). That's not the worst thing that could happen, but it is a disappointment nonetheless. And you HAVE TO admit that some of the characters in BJ are as one-dimensional as you can get. I mean, look at Norma's mother (whose name escapes me). She borders on autistic, she's so one-sided. She's not believable in any way as a real person. And the machine that kills Serena's baby is BORING. The only interesting relationship in the entire book is between Agamemnon and his son. Whatshisname Harkonnen is interesting, but he certainly hasn't really done anything interesting so far. The wormrider guy seems kinda stupid too. And why would anyone besides the Fremen be on Arrakis if it weren't for the spice? I think BJ reads like a children's book, and it is a disgrace to Frank Herbert's series in these respects.
Will I continue to read them? Yes, because I am a Dunatic just like you guys. But I cannot deny the vast superiority of Frank Herbert's writing either. I suspect that the really juvenile stuff comes from Kevin Anderson (no I don't have any proof), and I have to admit that I think I would prefer it if just Brian Herbert wrote the last book by himself.
So there you have it. We've got people who hate all the prequels, people who accept all the Dune books as Canon, and now you've got someone like me who likes the first Trilogy but doesn't like the second one. I guess you can't please everyone all the time.
