So I got you Jay! I recall that you said vehemently Paul didn't have OM...
Well it's nice to see my hard work paid off at least a little if it convinced at least one person.

But as far as my theory, I just feel that most writers aren't that preplanned. It's possible Frank was from the very first line that he wrote in the very first book that he new the entire saga and all the details. But in my own limited experience writing, I find that through the process, it seems most people riff on ideas and generate new ones, storylines change slightly and some themes are added and expanded upon.
My personal opinion is that Frank's writing evolved as it went rather than the fact that he worked everything out to the finest detail in the very beginning and then wrote it done Book 1 then 2 then 3 etc.
I don't doubt he had an outline, but all the specifics and so forth, my guess he probably didn't have it all worked out from the get go.
But like I said, it's just a guess. I am betting he did think about the worm cycle to a detailed extent and probably relationships of characters he thought about a lot. But remember, writing evolves. Originally Dune was supposed to be about Pardot Kynes...well that kind of changed didn't it? eventually the whole PArdot Kynes story became a chapter in the appendix. That's just an example of how writing sort of evolves.

But your opinion is certainly very valid too.
