ITS A PHOTO FINISH AT THE RACETRACK.

The Wacky Races hosted The Shadows on Saturday afternoon with a loss for either team meaning curtains for the season.

Both teams had good form going into the finals, and The Shadows were keen to emulate last years glorious finals campaign. The Cartoons were dealt a blow close to game time when dynamic mid fielder Andrew Embley was caught up in a drug controversy and had to be a late withdrawal. His replacement Tyson Edwards would prove to be more than serviceable.

It was the Wakky's right from the start, led by Cam Mooney, who managed to jump The Shadows. Had it not been for 3 late goals from Captain Richardson, late in the first quarter, the game may well have been over at quarter time.

QUARTER TIME.

The start of the second quarter saw Darkness Eternal lineup with not one player forward of the centre, as General Lee, attempted to stem the tide of goals. It was to no avail as Mutley's men went on a goal kicking rampage, with Chad Cornes proving to be the danger man. Five goals to 2 during the quarter, had most pundits predicting a blow out by games end.

HALF TIME

General Lee shuffled the decks at the long break, and in a telling move called on Jimmy Bartel to lead from the front out of the midfield, and adopted a more attacking game plan. The results proved effective, and despite Mutley countering with the move of Edwards into the middle, The Shadows piled on 9 goals to 6 in the third quarter to be back in the game.

3/4 TIME
Wakky Races 16 15 (111) lead Darkness Eternal 14 10 (94)

With the deficit cut to 17 points The Shadows went to the 3/4 time huddle full of confidence, and came out firing. Whatever The General said to his men had the desired effect, as they piled on 3 quick goals to take the lead. From this point the game went goal for goal, with many experts reaching for the rule book for what to do should a draw arise. With the clock showing 32 minutes and Mutley's men fading fast, ruckman Brad Ottens took a huge grab 25 metres out as the siren sounded. With his side down by 3 points the big man set himself for the most important kick of his enigmatic career. Tragically for him the kick went just wide, and to mass jubilation of the home crowd, The Cartoons had scraped home by 2 points.

The game was a classic finals contest, but thats not much of a consolation for General Lee and his men, who unfortunately had far to many players down on the day, particularly in the first half. For the Shadows, its Darkness until 2008, whilst The Cartoons live on and await the loser of tonights clash between RFL powerhouses the Party Animals and The SwanGunners.
