• Attention ZBTs -- VBC, Thursday, December 23, 06:26:20pm
  In conjunction with the Dukes vs. Dayton game on Sunday, January 30 there will be a gathering of Zebes at the game and at the Red Ring afterwards. Game time is 2 o'clock at Consol Energy Center. That should have us at the Red Ring around 4 for dinner and drinks. This is very informal. Just buy tickets on your own and show up at the bar. If you can't make the game we hope you can make it to the bar after the game.
  
  Ask for tickets in Section 112 if you are not already a season ticket holder. That's were I will be sitting along with another ZBT from the 70s. At the WVU game there were many WVU fans in section 112 (which is at center court) so there should be tickets available now. Fill those seats with old Zebes so Dayton fans don't get them.
  
  This game is also the annual reunion game for Dukes players so you'll see a lot of people from days gone by.
  
  I no longer have the e-mail addresses for 80zebe or Tony84 or Tejas Duke so I hope you guys see this and will be there. Please pass the word along to anyone else who may be interested.

  Well the team has reached the 1/3 point of the season and the record or 5-5, even to the most pessamistic of fans, is bit disappointing.
  
  To their credit they have beaten the gallatically bad / bad teams ( Bluefield, B. Green, UMBC ) on the schedule. Against the average to above average ( RMU, PSU, GB, WVU, UIPUI, GM )they have managed a 2-4 record with very limited contributions from the "Minutemen" ( Jones, Peggau, Marhold, Theis )and uneven, in most cases, contributions from the more "Erratic" players on the team ( Johnson, Montiero, Talley, Wright ). Against the one really good team on the schedule ( Pitt ) they were beaten soundly.
  
  So going forward what does this season hold ??
  
  1) If there is truly a run to be made it probably will be made in the middle third of the season. If not, I suspect the team will be a slightly above .500 team when the season ends.
  
  2) It is a over simplification to say "We would have won this game or that game had we shot our free throws better / or rebounded better". The team, I suspect, is "What it is" in those two areas.
  
  3) I suspect we will get a bit of a boost when EE returns. I expect his play to be "Uneven". He will mix the good with the bad ( much like BJ M ).
  
  4) If there is a bit of hope it is that Joel W. seems to be coming on a bit. I question his use / non use sometimes, but not being privy to all that is occuring I'll defer to the coach to allocate his minutes. All, I'll say is on a nite ( G. Mason ) when there was not a lot of rebounding or offensive juice Joel got 20 minutes and Mike T. got 38. I realize they play different postions, but with the flexibility in players being able to play multiple positions I would have liked more JW and less Mike T ( 1 rebound, 2 assists, and not a lot of scoring ). As for "D" impact on the game I'll allow that Joel W misses an assignment occasionally but I'm willing to sacrifice that for what else he brings to the table.
  
  5) TJM has played better than I thought he would initially ( mea culpa ). Even with that the team is only 5-5. How will his play translate as the road toughens. Here is hoping that he continues to improve and this is reflected in the W-L column.
  
  I ask myself what would cause me to raise my expectations going forward and how likely are they to occur.
  
  To materially alter the season :
  
  1) Damian S has to play materially better, at least statistically.
  2) BJM must play better for longer stretches of time.
  3) Rod. P must find some sort of game.
  4) EE must play better than I anticipate he will.
  5) The one true "Wildcard" ( Joel W ) takes a quantum leap forward.
  
  In summary, while there are MANY ( maybe too many )things that have to go right over the remainder of the season for the pre season expectations to be met, I resolve to try and "Enjoy the journey".

Those two were 6-22 and just 1-8 on treys. Neither guy should be taking many treys. The team has much better shooters in Clark, McConnell and Talley. BJ and Damian should stick to what they do best - slashing and attacking the rim."   1. For the first time in a long time the Duke's OOC schedule appears more difficult than their conference schedule. There are only two or three teams in the A 10 better than GM.
  2. Every game will ba a battle between Offensive rebounding differential vs Turnovers, with Free Throw points being the third and deciding factor. Do well in two of those three and the Dukes will beat most of their remaining opponents. Do badly in two of the three and Dukes will not do so well.
  
  So, sit back, enjoy the ride, and take solace in the knowledge that you were there in the beginning watching the best Dukes backcourt duo in decades.

Don't forget about the ladies' game at 5:30 PM. The Dukes are ranked #35 by Sagarin; St Francis (5-5) at #130. Dukes are favored by 18 1/2 pts. • Don't be surprised if IUPUI gives the Dukes all they can handle, and possibly blows us out if we're not careful. The Jaguars led Ohio State (yes, that OSU) 50-41 with 12:40 to play, before. OSU (7-0) countered with a big run, including 11 straight to take a 52-50 lead with 8:37 left.   This should be a good game. From the Official Site: "The Jaguars have been idle since. DU and IUPUI both own wins over Green Bay - their one common opponent. IUPUI defeated the Phoenix 63-46 in the O'Reilly Auto Parts CBE Classic at Oxford, Ohio on Nov. 22. Duquesne won 81-71 at Green Bay on Dec. 8. IUPUI, which is 1-4 on the road lost at Gonzaga in the season opener, lost by one at Miami, Ohio (59-58) and by three at Atlantic 10 member Saint Louis (58-55). The Jaguars led current No. 2 (AP) Ohio State by nine in the second half and were tied with 6:55 left in a 75-64 road loss on Dec. 9."

  • As of this afternoon and including the win over Ohio U, the Dukes have an RPI of 14. Vanderbilt's (6-3) RPI is 57. They are 0-3 on the road. Real Time RPI favors the Dukes by 10. A win by the Dukes over Vandy just might result in some recognition by the AP and/or the Coaches Polls. The game will start at 2 PM on Sun. so that should allow you to get to the Palumbo to see the Dukes win another game and then get home in time to watch the Steelers beat the Jets.       • If the Dukes were to win out as you describe, including beating Pitt, they'd be 14-1 and most certainly ranked in the Top 25. However, there's an away game at Ohio State (8-1 record & sporting a RPI of 4) between now and the Pitt game. A win over Ohio State on Dec. 28th will be an extemely difficult task. But a 13-2 record would be an excellent outcome at the end of the non-conference schedule. But we're getting a little ahead of ourselves. Vandy is the next target!   On the yuku board someone mentioned that wvu got the initial jump ball and also unbounded at the start of the second half. I thought about that at the game but guessed the refs were right. I just watched the first half again. There were no jump balls in the first half. The dukes should have unbounded. Coaches should be aware of this. Also if the dukes could not warm up then neither should wvu. Again coaches should say something.

    • I do not believe your interpretation is correct. I am no expert, and could be wrong, but my understanding is that the possession arrow goes to the team who does not win the initial jump ball. It only changes if there is a held ball (or other event that would trigger a jump ball under the old rules). It does not matter who took the last shot. At least that is how I understand the rule.
