  Gentlemen and ladies, we have dwelled far too long upon the Robert Morris game. If everyone agrees, I will list all of the appropriate takeaways from that game below, and we can move on from here without further comment.
  
  1. Robert Morris won the game. They are coming off a great season and an NCAA appearance, and have a good shot at heading back to the tournament this year. Congratulations to them for a nice win against an A-10 team on their court.
  
  2. We were in the game and could have won if we would have played better, especially down the stretch. But we didn't play better, so we lost.
  
  3. We were missing two very important pieces of our team: Eric Evans and Damian Saunders. Yes Saunders played, but it's evident that since his return he has not been himself. Either the ankle is bothering him or something else is going on, but we did not have the Damian Saunders we know for that game.
  
  4. I AM NOT USING EVANS AND SAUNDERS AS AN EXCUSE.
  
  5. This was the first real D1 game for our freshmen.
  
  6. I AM NOT USING THIS AN EXCUSE EITHER.
  
  7. Everyone who has ever played sports, and anyone who has followed sports, knows this: Unless you just lost the championship game, you have just played and either won or lost one game. Either way, put it behind you and move on.
  
  We've beaten Robert Morris each of the past couple of seasons and never talked about it afterwards. The fact that we're still talking about it tells me, as fans, we are not focused on the right things. I see no on talking about the fact that we have a game TONIGHT.
  
  If you think the loss to Robert Morris means ANYTHING else, e.g., that we flat out suck this year and woe is us, then do YOURself a favor and root for them, Pitt, Duke, or someone else. But if you're truly a Duquesne fan, then suck it up and start rooting for the Dukes to be UMBC.
  
  Now please, let's see some REAL posts (no response to this; just let the damned thing die already).

  • I think our guys have learned the meaning of the words intensity and desire. I like the way they played against BG, now they just need to keep up the intensity and want every game more than the other team. If we get beat by a better team, then so be it, however, I do not want to see us lose again because the other team wanted more than us. That my friend is my takeaway. GO DUKES!   • I think you are dead wrong about Peggau; he clearly has talent to go along with his 6' 8" body; you may not have noticed that he handles the ball pretty will for a big guy; and moves well without the ball; what I see now with Peggau is that the game is still moving fast for him; sometimes even for the best players it just takes playing time to allow the game to "slow down" for them and then you will see a more effective player.       • I agree also. Two years ago in Loretto, the rowdier St. Francis students decided that Rod and BC would be the Dukes they harassed. They both literally silenced the crowd by their play, including a few seconds where Rod took a charge, got an off. board and a put back where he was fouled and hit the FT.     • His time is running out. Thus far is a liability...when he has the ball he's out of control and you get the feeling a travel or charge is moments away. On defense he seems tough enough however he is slow to get set and almost always gets a block foul rather than draw the charge. In the Pitt game last year he showed a glimpse of some ability and that was it for all of 2009. Duquesne cannot afford any more projects....I'd give him a few more early out of conference games to get it together and if he can't he should sit at the end of the bench.   • Excellent response after the disappointment at RMU. What I liked was after DU built a workable lead in the first half they did not let BG back into the game. Regarding Rod P, if there is any discernable talent there, hopefully he flashes it soon. The team will need his bulk and athletic ability as the competition level rises when conference play begins. If he is indeed "knocking the rust off" from inactivity we should show him some patience. If this is the "Best he got" he will not be a factor going forward.   It seems like we have a tendency as fans to lean more towards the negative than the positive. I guess that it going to take awhile to shake off the residual effects of the Colleary, Edger, Porter, Nee era. Ron Everhart is doing a great job in busting through the Dukes=Flukes mindset he inherited. He is not perfect, but who is? He has however done what has seemed impossible in turning DU into a winningh program. So just for this thread (and in the spirit of Thanksgiving)I would propose that we focus on what we like about this team. Here are mine.
  
  1) After getting embarrassed our guys came out with a chip on their shoulders and took care of business on Monday. They need to keep this intensity going.
  
  2) Bill Clark has come to play this year. He has been nothing less than spectacular this year.
  
  3) Damien. Though his first two games were sub par by Saunder standards, maybe due to ankle problems, we all know what he is capable of.
  
  4) Our freshman class. All four guys are contributing. TJ is amazing. It just seems like good things happen each time he touches the ball.
  
  5) BJ is playing more aggressively this year. His game is taking the ball to the hoop. If he avoids the temptation of forcing threes (just take it in the flow of the game) he will be a terrific player.
  
  6) The early play of Johnson, Marhold, and Rod. Contrary to some views I think Rod is getting better, and in right circumstances can help this team.

  • Thanks for the Positive Thanksgiving Post CLK. I believe this team has a world of potential this year. Everyone seems to have picked it up from last year and the Frosh are amazing. Lets keep the faith and watch as this team takes us on the ride sometimes down but I will bet mostly up! Ron E. has elevated this team as you say and his best is yet to come also in my opinion.   • Negative comments are positive…if folks on this board did not voice negative comments over the years we’d still have Colleary as AD. In other words if the Dukes lay and egg then we should call a spade a spade. Positive – Freshman class is best we’ve seen in 25 years or more. Dukes are set a point guard for the next 4 years with TJ. Bill Clark has his touch back. Negative – Record should be 3-0…blowing 13 point lead against Robert Morris still hurts. But we need to win as many games as possible to have a shot at postseason. I think it comes down to playing with intensity, and getting Saunders healthy.       • The coaches, I hear, are very high on Rod, and think he can be a major force on this team. We've only seen flashes because we only get to see him in games. Personally, I'd like to see Marhold and Wright get more minutes because I think both have a high ceiling. I like Rod and would love to see him step it up, but my own observation is that his upside is along the lines of Jack May. That's certainly not a bad thing either.   The Dukes play a much better game, demolishing Bowling Green on the road. Damian Saunders plays better, but it sounds as though he is really hobbled by the ankle. BJ and Billy Clark dominate the scoring. TJ nearly has a triple double. Sean Johnson has a big second half. Step-up ame for Andre Marhold, who I believe is pushing for minutes.
  
  Meanwhile, I've still yet to read any account anywhere that either Texas Tech or Kansas State for their role in contributions of equipment to the troops in Afghanistan via Broward Community College - and K-State just added a former Broward player to its roster.
  
  BTW, while I think it's a good idea for DU to "self report a potential secondary violation," I've done a little (very little, in fact) research and offer this obvservation.
  
  The purpose of the NCAA rules against providing equipment to JUCO coaches and players is to prevent inequities in the recruiting process. In other words, the donations can not be made for the sake of benefitting or luring a recruit.
  
  Since the shoes were sent to the troops in Afghanistan, there has been a "technical" violation but not a "de facto" violation.
  
  I don't expect any sanctions against Duquesne.
  
  Little bit of an embarrassing set of circumstances in the middle of all of this, but certainly not a black eye on the program. In fact, the University would do well to collect donations at an upcoming game and send them to the troops. It would be a very classy and appropriate gesture.

  ...what changes would you make for the next game?
  
  I left RMU Friday night with that question on my mind. I would look at these factors;
  1. The Physical Factor - We got pushed around big time - even Damien! I know RE favors the 3 guard approach, but the top tier teams in the A10 play three forwards. It is time to go with three forwards. Saunders and Clark are givens. Establish Marhold, Peggau, Wright and even Theis up front. Montiero got killed on defense and his offense is strictly a slashing game. He earned his spot on the bench during crunch time at RMU. I fondly remember the physical guys, Rice, Somerset, Nelsons, Atkins! We don't have a power guy, so go with three who might rebound.
  2. The Post Factor - I think the ball only went into the low post a handful of times the whole game. We favor the three, but by using the low post, the three will open up more and we might get an in close basket. By the way, the high post is where Montiero might make a difference! The kid does get to the hoop. If we are going to run the same offense, I would move Saunders to the wing and put BJ in the post.
  3. The Guard Factor - When McConnell was on the bench, the offense did not score well. We miss Evans. He and TJ should be the starters. Develop Talley. Spot the others.
  4. Find a substitution pattern. When we went up by double figures, let the team on floor stay until the run is over.
  
  The RMU game was a disappointment. What changes come will tell the tale of the season.

Selection to the NCAA is an honor for sure, but in the big picture you can't ignor the strength of the conference Bobbie Mo plays in as well as the strength of its own schedule.   1. Damian has a sore ankle. With Eric Evans missing time due to surgery for an ankle injury, I will admit to some concern. Is this because of any changes to the Palumbo floor?
  
  2. Mackall has Rodrigo Peggau in the starting lineup, along with Saunders, Clark, McConnell and Monteiro.
  
  3. RMU Coach Toole: “We have to beat the teams like Duquesne on our schedule if we're to improve." Hmm. Between that and the P-G story, it’s obvious what drum they’re beating.
  
  No disrespect. RMU went to the NCAA Tournament last year, and they’ve had a solid program. Their last coach was gobbled up by the Big East. They have good things going on there. But Saunders (even with a bum ankle), Clark and Monteiro are the best three players on the court and with the current freshman class we’re going to be good for years to come.   • Actually the idea of a basketball preview goes back to when John Clayton was the sports editor. My senior year, the ad manager came up with enough money and we were able to do a full color cover. Great shot of Bruce Atkins. I know, times have changed and it doesn't sound like much, but in '79-'80 it was a big deal. We went NY Daily News style, big pic and headline.
