If the goal is to max-out the RPI effective scheduling of upper level teams in lower conferences is usually preferable to bottom teams in power conferences. If the goal is to draw fans PSU is the call over Fairfield ( i.e. ) no doubt. Have a hard time seeing PSU elevate to the upper levels of the Big-10 in the next 2 years. Questionable, at least to me, is if they can elevate to the middle of the Big-10 standings. Your theory of scheduling assumes that one can predict that certain teams, some of which you mentioned, from conferences with low RPI ratings will have equal or better RPIs than they had in the previous season. I believe that one must schedule at least some teams from conferences with RPIs better than the A-10. Frankly playing at least one Big 10 team a year can't be all that bad. - Predicting which teams in the lower conferences will have "Helpful" RPI ratings ( within a certain range ) would seem to me to be somewhat easier than trying to predict the major conferences ( bottom feeders ) teams RPI's. Remember that 25% of your RPI is based on your opponents / opponents. To predict accurately in either scenario ( bottom of Big 10 vs. power team of a lower echelon league ) is very difficult. As I said, schedule PSU as some benefits will accrue, but do so with the understanding of where we hope DU is in the "Success cycle" that PSU will probably not benefit your RPI.
