Subject: Chino is dead

okay so my wife's younger brother, who makes money working commercial fishing boats primarily in NC, takes a trip up to Montauk to work on a clamming boat. He calls me out of the blue from Manhattan while my wife is on an 11-day biz trip in China and Korea. He's totally trashed (fyi - he has long had a massive drug probem). He says he is down in the city between trips out on the boat and asks if he can crash at our place. I say sure (but inside I'm thinking I'd rather him not). Days go by and I don't hear from him. He doesn't have a cell so I can't check in -not that I would. Anyway, the day comes for Toni to return from the Orient and I'm coming home from work when lo and behold, he's sitting on our front stoop. Turns out he has no money and no luggage - just the clothes on his back and a pack of Marlboros. He claims that someone grabbed his bag at the bus terminal and bolted. He wants to stay for just a day and then head back to Montauk where he supposedly has a $10K check waiting for him. We give him cash and head for work. He's still there. Says the check won't be ready for another day. Oh, and he's spent the cash we gave him. So we give him more cash and he leaves. Calls back in a few days and says he is coming back to Manhattan to give us some money to hold while he goes back out on the boat. Days pass and no sign of him. Finally, we get a call from some chick in Montauk asking if Chino was really dead. Turns out that Toni's brother had gotten someone to call a bar in Montauk to announce that Chino is dead. A couple of days pass and still no word. Then we get a call from a woman in Norfolk area saying to please call her about her son. I recognize the area code as the same as one of the calls from Toni's brother. So I call and get this woman. Turns out it's Chino's mother and he is dead. Wants to speak with Toni's brother to find out what happened. I asked how she got our number and she said it was one of the last calls placed from her son's cell phone. That was a tough phone call. I told her how absolutely sorry I was for her loss and the terrible circumstances in which it occurred and she found out. I told her that if I speak to Toni's brother, I would try to get him to call.

We haven't heard from him although from another family member we learned that he's actually going back out on the fishing boat (although they are looking for a replacement for Chino) and that his story is that Chino stuffed a bunch of coke in his mouth when he saw cops on the train they were taking - that caused him to pass out and crash through a train window. All sounds fishy to me (pardon the pun).

Anyway, just some crazy stuff that if played out with a bit of imagination, might make for a good movie that they'd show on the Independent Film Channel one day.
