Get them something cheap, used, and that will handle decently. They don't need "protection" from other vehicles at that age so much as from themselves. They're probably gonna wreck, better to reduce the chances with a better-handling vehicle. Also, it's far cheaper to insure an older "car" than a new truck. And if they do wreck it, well, not such a big loss.

Seriously, give 'em an older CRV or something. Can't really go wrong with a 10 year old Honda that's had regular maintenance.
