Subject: Service engine soon Xterra 2005 diagnostic code P0455 related to BBEVAP CONTROL SYSTEM GROSS LEAK DETECTED

The service engine soon light came on one day after not properly closing the gas cap when fueling the Nissan Xterra 2005. A few days passed and the SES light came back on and we ran the diagnostics to get "P0455 related to BBEVAP CONTROL SYSTEM GROSS LEAK DETECTED" This SES light stayed on for many days. I think the car needs a tune up but it isn't running they bad and the mileage is typically local. This morning it was OFF, for no apparent reason, I didn't gas up or disconnect the battery - it was just OFF all of a sudden when I started the car and drove to work (5 miles at most) and then all of a sudden the SES came back on when I drove home today. I read something about a recall on this site regarding similar issues on older Xterras and wonder if the same thing is happening to my truck. The other recall supposedly affected models built up until 2004 but mine was purchased in 2005 new. How can I find out if this is a defective component and is it dangerous to drive it in the meantime? I have been hearing a disturbing sound when I accelerate but it's still has good pick-up, maybe needs new spark plugs, etc. The sound seems to be coming from the transmission. But I really don't know. It has about 94,000 miles and I'm faithful about oil changes and other maintenance. It is due for some regular maintenance, last dealer maintenance was done at about 60,000. It had a $500.00 problem recently with some electrical component but otherwise has been a reliable vehicle. The SES light came on before the undercarriage sound started. Thoughts or advice from any experts out there would be appreciated. Thanks!
