Subject: It didn't have to be this way

I grew up in Canarsie and left only few years ago, so you'll pardon me if I don't exhibit any of the dewy-eyed longing for the "good old days" that seems to be all the rage here. My most enduring memories of Canarsie aren't very pleasant ones. They are dominated by images of avaricious, block-busting real estate agents, and by cowardly "neighbors", who willingly submitted to their scare-mongering.

If just a few more of you had displayed even a modicum of courage just a few short years ago, we wouldn't have any need for nostalgia web sites, like this one. We'd still be able to visit our old community in relative safety, without fear of being the victim of racial violence.

Now, I know what some of you will say: My observations are "racist", at the very most, and "politically incorrect", at the very least--But God help me if it isn't the truth, as unpleasant a truth as that may be.

Sooner or later, you people will run out of suburbs to flee to, and you'll be forced to fight for what little you have left (save for your dignity, which waved bye-bye to some of you a long time ago). You can run, but you'll never be able to permanently hide from what's chasing you.

Moshe S.

I totally agree with you. I still live in Brooklyn near Canarsie and almost everyday in the paper I read about someone getting shot there. Its pathetic.

Same here. I got out of Canarsie in '98 and currently live in Mill Basin. But I'm beginning to see the same early warning signs here which plagued Canarsie a decade ago (many houses are going on the market here, more than before).

I would REALLY like to see some crime statistics of Canarsie from both 1990 and 2000, so I can conpare it with NYC's stats on the whole. I think the results would be VERY telling.

>Yes, I knew you Vincent, your sister's name is Julie (she was good a good looking gal) Well, I moved to Howard Beach in 95 and the Zombies are not much here. It's a great neighborhood.

>moshe, i got news for you the BLOCK BUSTING real estate agents came from the TEMPLES. If it wasnt for the almighty dollar canarsie would still be fine. there is an old saying but it is racist and i dont want to print it but it is true about canarsie and every other neighborhood like it. look at crown heights.

Hey ME.... Being that you didn't leave a name, I won't either... The point you are subtly trying to say is that the Jews are the reason why Canarsie is now a shit hole. You are mistaken ... the truth is that the jewish kids actually took school seriously, because in the most part the Jewish parents wanted their kids to have a better life than they had.... then went off to college, got good jobs, got married, moved to the city, suburbs or other places all over the country to better themselves... When their parents retired and wanted to live elsewhere... they would naturally need to sell... I seem to remember that in the late 80's and later, that the only buyers seemed to be Blacks, not Jews or Italians, just Blacks. What should the Jews have done? Give their home for free to the italian kids that never wanted to leave Canarsie, in order to keep it white? Sorry, but I just had to clarify what you didn't have the balls or intelligence to say.
