task 14

By Ana Paula Menezes Lima

The communicative competence is the ability to produce sentences that can be understood, even if they are not gramatically correct. Traditional tests do not focus very much in the communicative competence. For example, one of the most famous task in a test, like the Multiple Choice does not focus in the ability of the testee in produce appropiate sentences.
The tests should focus in real life situations, in which the testee can really use the knowledge he/she acquired inside the classroom. Thus, a good way to do this is to focus the test in a more functional way, rather than grammatical, or based only in grammatic rules. The author gives some good examples that should be followed in a test. However, sometimes it is not possible to make a so communicative test as we would like, but as Kitao points :"It is, of course, not always possible to make language tests communicative, but it may often be possible to give them communicative elements". In that way, the test would be at least, a little bit more pleasure to do than the traditional one.
