Hi I grew up in Canarsie in the 1940s & 50s. Canarsie was all fields, weeds, trees & unpaved streets. One block had blacktop, that's where we went roller skating. We went after E. 87th street to pull weeds in the winter so we could go iceskating. We played games in the street like colors, giant steps & Johnny on the pony. We stayed out until the street lights went on, if we had street lights We also played I declare war in a circle of dirt with a small knife. Sometimes we even went to Seaview Park. I went to PS 115, then to Prospect Heights High HS. Most of my friends went to Tilden HS
Canarsie was the greatest place to grow up in those days, we had so much freedom. We even roasted potatoes in the "lots" in a real fire. Of course the middle was always hard. We did not care, they tasted so good to us. Canarsie was so open then, we could watch the fireworks in Cony Island & Rockaway Playland.
