Canarsie Memories -- Jackie Hernandez, 13:23:01 09/29/06 Fri (host106.209.51.234.conversent.net/209.51.234.106)
I have great childhood memories of Canarsie. I lived in the Breukelen Houses on Farragut Road with my older sister (Haydee) and four brothers (John, whose nickname was Papo, Richard, Julio, whose nickname was Chickie, and my baby brother Henry). I graduated from Canarsie H.S. in 1969. I can still envision playing stoop ball in the front, ringolevio, playing stickball and handball at P.S. 242 with my brother. I lived across the building from the Lumbalino's, the McCartans, the Crippens, the Hoosiers, Barbara Layton. Where have they all gone? Canarsie was a very happy place to grow up. I loved fishing at the Canarsie Pier and camping on the grounds. A smile comes to my face when I think of Charlie the ice cream man. How you would hear his bell and my brothers and sister would run to the window and scream for my mother to throw out a dime to buy something from Charlie. That was a time of innocence and friendship that I'll never forget. It's a shame that people lose touch with those that you spent years sharing experiences and having fun with. Anyway, enough reminiscing for now. Maybe someone remembers me. Regards.
I'm now living with my sister, Haydee, and brother, Henry, in Long Island, New York.

My grandparents owned Napoli's Bakery in the early 50's, on Rockaway Parkway. I'm searching for some old pictures or stories. I thought maybe the Canarsie Courier would have something in thier archives. My Nana Adele (Lily) passed away 5 years ago, so the stories are buried with her. If anyone has a memory they would like to share, please do... I heard my Nana was very generous with the samples.
Thanks.
Sincerely,
Lauren Moretti

Does anyone remember the knitting store on the corner of Avenue L & E. 94th Street? The person who, I believe, owned the store, had children whose names were Jack and Jill. The store later became a card shop that carried birthday corsages. I live in Florida now and no one has ever heard of those birthday corsages. Ring any bells?
