"Lo Kung, I am back.”
"Lo Kung, where are you? Please call me!”
"Lo Kung, I miss you!”
My pager was jammed with Maggie's message.
I didn't feel like calling anyone, not even Maggie, when I just got home from the airport. I was so exhausted after staying in Chongqing for more than a month. All I really wanted was a clean bathroom and a comfortable bed.
I needed to take a rest so badly.
Lying on the bed, I kept thinking how thing was going in Chongqing. Could Iris handle the business all by herself? Was it safe to let her live at the quarters alone? Would she remember to wait for my call at the store next morning?
I missed Iris so much. I had to tell her about that first thing in the morning, I told myself before falling to sleep.
"Iris, I miss you so much,”I told her.
"I miss you too,”Iris replied.
We could only talk for a few more minutes over the phone, as it's impossible for us to have an intimate conversation when she’s standing in the street.
I called Maggie after finished talking with Iris.
"Driver? Where are you? Just came back from Canada?”Siu Mui answered the phone half-sleepingly.
"Umm...Right. I just came back last night. Is Maggie there?”I felt so uneasy to tell Maggie's sister a lie.
"Maggie...Oh, she just went to the market to buy some food,” Siu Mui answered nervously.
Maggie went to the market at 7 in the morning? Was it a lie or what? Maggie had never gone to the market at 7 in the morning. And why was Siu Mui staying at our home? I said to myself.
"Well, I'll call again later then,”I said.
I called Maggie again when I got home from work in the late evening.
"Lo Kung! You’re back! How's Canada? I miss you so much,” Maggie answered cheerfully.
"When did you come back?”I asked.
"I've been back for almost two weeks. When will you come back to see me? Did you buy anything for me from Canada?” she said.
"I'll be back in the weekend. By the way, what's your sister doing at our home?”I asked.
"Her boyfriend took a business trip to Shanghai. She just doesn't want to stay at her place alone,”she answered.
There're lot of questions I wanted to ask her, but I figured it would be better to ask her next time I see her. Actually, I needed some more time to make up a story of what I had done in Canada.
And she better made up a story of going to the market at 7 in the morning.
To be continued....
