Andrew could have been the one maintaining that cover story. His things were all over the apartment, and we only think Buffy was there because he said she was.

It's pretty funny how Whedon covered so many bases with that idea. For people who thought it wasn't like Buffy to party all over Europe and forget Spike and Angel--she didn't. We never saw Gellar because she wasn't available, and now that's explained in terms of the story.
