I think I can help you here- there was an alternate ending filmed, apparently, in which there was a bigger explanation as to why The First had chosen to act when it did. This ending also had Spike's hand reaching out of the rubble, like you saw- I certainly don't think you sound delusional as there was definite proof from Joss Whedon (can't remember where it was posted) that this was the case. They chose to drop this scene when they started drafting spike's story over on ATS (remember he was incorporeal for ages).

Why they decided to show this ending only in Canada god only knows!
