Joss didn't invent the plot of a mutant cure. It's been done several other times in the X-Men's long history. Early reports about the movie seemed to indicate that X3 was going to closely follow Joss's version of the cure story. Which, in my opinion it didn't, but would have been better if it had. I believe if you look at the cast list the female doctor that was working to give mutants the cure had the same name as the female doctor in Joss's Astonishing X-men.
