I always assumed it was just a plot device to enable him to cut it out in the final battle which he would not have been able to do if it were in his head. The problem I hade with that whole bit was that while I am not a medical person I don’ts see how a chip in the area of the thoracic nerve would control your behavior and how you could cut it out with a broken bottle and a. not do yourself A. major damage and B. bleed all over the place.
