Angel couldn't give Buffy a normal life that mom's want for their daughters. The facts spoke for themselves, she didn't have to play the heavy.

The facts don't speak for themselves... that approach would have been useless had she been talking to (for example) Spike.

There are counter-arguments. The slayer is going to die young, so making long-term plans requiring short-term denial may be somewhat pointless.

The reason Joyce didn't have to play heavy wasn't because her values were universal. She didn't have to play 'heavy' because she knew Angel shared them... that neither of them wanted Buffy to make the sacrifice of humanity required to be with him.
