It became a matter of servicing the main character arc and after awhile Xander became more of a peripheral character. Not all characters get fair representation and that is all story driven. Now, my take on the end is that Xander had an extreme reaction to the loss of the woman he loved, but in typical Xander way he attempted to express that with some humor (aimed at Andrew). I feel his true reaction would be a more private matter, which is consistant with the character.
