SHARON CUNETA: I MIGHT RUN FOR PASAY MAYOR AFTER ALL

MEGASTAR Sharon Cuneta said she has grown tired of denying reports that she would run for mayor of Pasay City and that she is now thinking of throwing her hat into the political arena after all.

"Nananahimik ako. Ang dami nilang press releases na isinasali ako (I'm minding my own business, but they drag my name in their 'press releases')," Sharon told Inquirer Entertainment on Monday.
Sharon was referring to news reports quoting Pasay City Mayor Peewee Trinidad as saying the Megastar should first live in the city before running for mayor in the 2004 elections.
The star reacted to Trinidad's statement last Sunday in her weekly variety show "Sharon" on ABS-CBN. She said she has been denying reports and rumors about her political plans in Pasay for almost 10 years now, "but since they insist that I'm running, baka pag-isipan ko na tuloy."
"The tabloids carried statements from Mayor Trinidad saying if I would run, I should first buy a house in Pasay," Sharon said. "I've long been looking for a house there. If I do buy one, why should I make it known? I won't borrow money from them anyway."
The actress is the daughter of the late Pablo Cuneta, who was the mayor of Pasay City for 41 years until he retired in 1998 due to old age and sickness.
Cuneta died in September 2000.
On TV, Sharon also said Trinidad is her godfather, having been a sponsor in her baptism.
But Trinidad told Inquirer Entertainment his statement had been "put out of context."
He said he was simply discussing residency requirements for mayoral candidates.
"What I said was not a challenge," Trinidad said. "I'm not the type of person who would say such a thing, especially to Sharon."
Trinidad refused to discuss the issue further, saying that "talking about it now, without studying it, would only muddle it." He said he would release a press statement on the issue.
Cuneta said Trinidad's statements came out in newspapers while she and her husband, Sen. Francisco "Kiko" Pangilinan, was on a week-long vacation in Thailand.
If she decided to run for public office in Pasay, she would be running against her godfather.
"I can serve the people of Pasay in my own way. I can do many things even if I'm not holding a public office," Cuneta had said in a radio interview in February 2000, six months before her father died.
Then Pasay City vice mayor Jovito Claudio took over the mayor's post when Cuneta died.
MABUHAY SI SHARON KUBETA
