Don't assume the dog will protect. If you are counting on it to protect in a bad situation, that is not the time to find out about its nerve.

how true.
my uncle had a doberman during the 70's rage that only barred HIM from the house and yard.
my grandparents had a neighbor who had a dane that allowed burglars to load a u-haul with the familys possessions but attacked the first officer to the scene.
my sister has two psychotic chi's that terrorize mailmen, paperboys, strangers asking directions and my grandbabies but who allow jehovah witness and mormon missionaries not only onto the porch but into the house with nary a peep.
in my case, i have no idea whether my dog darryl will protect me or mine if needed. he does have a certain bark he uses when he believes something is amiss (which scared the bejesus out of ME when i first heard it and I was expecting it LOL)but we are fortunate to have lived a life (so far and knock on wood) that has been fairly free of anything to be protected from. of course, his looks alone tend to make people back off rather quickly as he tends to appear to be deciding whether they will fit in his kibble bowl when he looks at them so maybe we've dodged a few bullets without knowing it.
i do use that very tendency in people by taking darryl with me when i need to travel at night or go somewhere that i'm not real sure about the neighborhood. all in all though, darryl is a pet and, as the human, i look to myself to protect me and mine.
as you say, the bb world goes on. i don't see anything wrong with the sch training as it (from what i've seen and learned) focuses on control of the dog above everything else. i think those who speak loudest against it, don't really understand what the training does. they just see the bite work.
i think all the arguements and everything just comes down to this:
those who test their stock (using whatever test they're talking about) will know more about what sort of litter they should get and how that litter should progress. those who don't, won't. in my opinion, why not test? why not have all the information you can have BEFORE you breed?
when it all boils down, a few years from now will tell the tale. some breeders will float; some will sink. people will buy their pups from those they believe have the sort of dog they want. why argue and trashtalk about any of it?
