Having looked at the GSD evaluation systems in use in some of the societies there are much we can learn from them, good and bad. In their national and international awards the problem of the gene pool is addressed to a certain extent. Whether this is sufficient I am not in a position to judge.
The process of defining the physical and mental characteristics of the Boerboel is only now gathering momentum. The protagonists of appraisals for "looks without purpose" have painted themselves into a corner by neglecting sound "working" conformation. There are examples of how physical working ability in the GSD had been reduced because of wrong conformation appraisal. The same is even more true for the Boerboel.
The inherent mental abilities of the breed as a working dog is what the HBSA had been focussing on this past year, with the assistance of David Harris. The is no "guick fix". Where most conformational faults can be identified at an early age by judging of the phenotype, mental assesment is more complicated and the final rate of success only determined during the training of the dog.

The concept of SHOW vs WORK should in my personal opinion never be part of the Boerboel vocabulary. A true champion should be typical of type and conformation for the breed and should have PROVEN to have the mentality and the working ability reguired for the Boerboel. We cannot start at the top, but we can decide on the journy, map out the route and decide on the vehicle to reach our destination.

The HBSA Boerboel Clinics in Florida, Oklahoma and Colorado will give much attention to this particular subject.
