Subject: Breed specific guidelines for Penn Hip

Breed Specific DJD Probability Based on DI
Source
http://www.pennhip.org/djdprobability.html
Please go to the above site and review.

"Passive hip laxity assessed by distraction radiography has been shown to be the primary risk factor for developing degenerative joint disease (DJD). The relationship of hip laxity to DJD is breed dependent. Breed-specific guidelines can be formulated to ensure optimal selection of breeding animals."

David's note: Even though there are different response curves for the various breeds, I would just like the opportunity to say that, for the breeder, except for the special case of the GSD, the curves are roughly similar and to breed for lower DI's is still even preferred though DJD can occur at relatively low DIs in a small number of cases. Would it be good to have a specific curve for the BB? Sure. I wouldn't expect the curve to be radically different than the Rottweiler example, which really isn't markedly different from the other curves (except the GSD). In any case although the technique is not absolutely optimal the alternatives (not-xraying-irresponsible to the point of cruelty)
(using other scoring techniques, better than nothing, but how much?)

The information captured by PennHip is quantitatively better as demonstrated by the higher heritability of hip status of dogs bred according to DI. It would be preferable, as I have referred to previously on this board, to have the hip status of all the littermates of the both of the dogs you planned to breed. But even if you don't, all else being equal it is still a better technique. They even throw in an extended view like OFA. If they see any DJD they let you know.
