I've been playing piano/synthesizer/keyboard/organ for 15 years. I loved/played guitar when I was much younger. I now play flute (less tiring than sax or clarinet, requires less effort and you can play for hours without stop), clarinet, violin and of course sax(alto). I would like to try tenor sax and brass(trumpet and trumbome?).
Crazy.
Yes I paly music everyday..... well almost.

I want a mpc with bright sound rather than the b45. I have tried some other Vandoren's, and some are good on higher register, but too blur on lower ones. finally I bought a Lormax....(in Tom Lee)
but I am sure the Lormax may not be the best one to buy...you try for yourself is better...if you have time feel free to ask the staff in Tom Lee for the Selmer one($1200), try it, I think that's a nice one...but too expensive...and I only tried it for fun....

I use yamaha 3C, 4C and Rico 3 mpcs,
I use rico 2.5 and royal 2 reeds.
All are satisfactory to me. I like the royal reeds more than the Rico reeds. The #3 mpcs are easier, the 4C is more expressive but you should see the all teeth mark on the mpc. I've almost filed a hole on the 4C mpc with my upper front teeth. It is a lot of effort.
My friends like my clarinet playing more than my sax. The sound is so much more interesting. Of course the sax wins hands down on looks and volume.

Mark, why do you use teeth patch to protect your mouthpiece? It's costly maybe(not so if compared with other accessories) but...worth it.

In fact I have no idea how to use a teeth patch (pad?). Would it damage my mpc?
How do you remove worn out pads from the mpc?

yea, 標, it is too expensive..$1200..so just ask to try it, dun buy it. by the way you can also ask for a Vandoren Crystal...it is a trasparent one (it is not a normal one), price I think around $600....I dun have particular comment on that one...but I just suggest you to try more, just to broaden one's horizon...I remember part of the model number of a brighter Vandoren mpc...proberbly something like 5JV stuff...ask for any thing you wanna try...and I always ask for a music room in Tom Lee when trying...

I think the crysal one's just for fun...my friend bought an orange sax mpc in Tomlee, he is a beginner and said "no good". I am planning to buy 2 clarinet mpc, one for classic and the other for jazz, and I found if we want to play the Benny Goodman style or all jazz technique using clarinet, our lower lip will suffer a very very hard time, but for sax- alto, it is much more comfortable. For soprano sax using a metal mpc, is another nightmare....

maybe you understand me in a wrong way.....vandoren has a mpc called something like 'crystal', and it is just white or transparent in colour....I think the orange one u said was just a normal plastic one......the one i sad is much more heavier than the normal one......anyway, so what have you bought, finally?

I don't play clarinet, but I've never seen any transparant mpc from VanDoren. Is it possible that you confused the brand Pomarico with VanDoren?

just stick the "teeth patch" to the mouthpiece. Remove...just peel it off! No damage by the sticker-like patch itself.

U are right, the orange one is that plastic one, and I still haven't got a chance to see the clarinet crystal mpc...I bought nothing from Tomlee as they do not have the B45 at the moment. They have B40, I tried, overall feeling not bad...tone sounds straight forward and round, but I really want to try the B45, so have to wait...

In fact I've seen crystal mpcs, for sax and for clarinet at Parsons Music in Times Square, Causeway Bay.
Look like glass, clear, trasparent, heavy.
Sell for around $700.

千祈唔好客氣，大家研究下...我覺得都係Sax比較易吹，但如果學了Sax, clarinet都可以好快上手，我當初想吹clarinet，都係因為鐘意電影辣手神探開場周潤發扮識吹那首歌，現在我已經達成心願，其他單簧管名曲當然要聽莫札特單簧管協奏曲622號，Jazz 就不少得Benny Goodman, 仲有幫不少電影吹Solo的Nicholas Bucknall(作品之一是紐約深秋)，得閒去HMV試聽啦!

I also think that saxophone is easier...but normally people should do clarinet first...I did it in a wrong way and get all sorts of problem, like the embrochure...the position of 'throat'......shape of ur mouth when playing.....
but I feel much better now.....George Gershwin's 'Rhapsody in Blue' is pretty goo to listen to......but for good classical pieces......go to Mozart....

I've tried both thin(B&S--transparent) and thick(selmer)one. I think the thin one is a bit fine for tight embrochure and offer easier control and adaptation. The thick one is more comfort in terms to dim down the vibration for your front teeth.
My experience is they both bear similar wearing rate and the Selmer thick patch has a rapid downtrend once a bitten hollow is formed---and I've to trim it and shift the good portion to the point for my teeth then.

Hi friends,
I said that I am a crazy and I am.
I bought a Jupiter slide trumpet from Tom Lee and started trying to play trumpet this month. I also bought from Tom Lee a Yamaha silent brass which you stick on the bell of the trumpet to COMPLETELY silence/mute the trumpet so that you only hear the sound in your headphone. Nobody else hear it or get disturbed. It is so incredible. I wish they have something like that for saxes. Are you listening, Yamaha? Can you hear me?.........cc Yamaha Corp.
I can now play easily one and a half octave. On some days I can play up to two octaves. But just major scales and long notes, not yet tunes. Not yet proficient.
The trumpet sound is so different.....it is more dramatic, pompous, and not so jazzy or sleazy as the saxes.
