I would like to buy a metal mouthpiece and leather ligature for my alto saxphone.

Any recommendation? Budget: HK$300-500.

Thanks.

a good leather ligature is near $100-200-HKD. And a metal mouthpiece is over $700-HKD (A new Selmer jazz metal mouthpiece is near $1700-HKD).

So, I suggest you add a little budget for your mouthpiece and ligature.

I adjust the budget:

Mouthpiece: 500-700HK$
Ligature: 200HK$

Any good recommendation. I like the sound soft and clear.

I have checked with TomLee. The metal mouthpiece costs from HK$1200-$1600.

Brand: Duroff, Selmer

Any recommendation?

Now I am using Yamaha 4C, I want to buy 5C or 6C for my Alto. Any suggestion? I want the sound to be more brilliant and solid.

it is unreasonable prices(hkd1700) for mouthpieces.
it is not worth, it is only a pieces of metal.

Saxdog.

Is there any specific reason that you need a metal piece?

Why not try Vandoren jumbo java? It's selling point is ebonite mpc with sound approaching metal one.

Just a trial. Since it is too expensive to buy a high-end model of sax, I would like to add different accessories (such as mouthpiece and ligature) for sound improvment. Of course the skill is important but I think I gain certain level of skill and it's time to upgrade tools.

HK$1700 is not worth? I think it is the value of your decision. I know some of them are hand-made with 24K gold plating.

Saxdog,

Metal piece on alto is too bright for my taste. If you just want to try something different why don't you go to the stores and try them out? If you brought the piece home and decided that it is not what you expected what are you gonna do? On the other hand I am very satisfied with my Meyer. You might want to check it out.

Saxdog,

Sure, Meyer is a brand of mpc. It is possibly the most popular mpc in the history of Jazz. The most desirable ones are the NY bros, they usually sell for 500 or more USD on ebay. I've seen it went for more than 1000 USD, but not sure if it is a real deal or just a shill. Anyway I've not have the fortune to try one of those and I would not recommand any non-pro to get one of those except if you are a collector. Some people say that since JJ Babbitt bought the Meyer Bro Co, the quality has been going down hill. But IMHO for 70 USD it is still a good deal. By the way I am talking about the rubber piece.

I have a Berg Larsen, but seldom use it... too bright and hard to control for me.... Anyway, it's only my skill is not good enough, but my master plays it very well, the sound is very cool and very "jazzy", you know?!

Custom is another series by Yamaha. It costs much then normal one. For detail you may browse their website.

Yamaha sax 6C mouthpiece, mmmmmmmh,

"Powerful volume and rich tonal variations, excellent for experienced players"........whatever it means.

That's what yamaha says on its web page. But it didn't mention that the player easily gets tired. And it reserves "well suited for jazz" for 7C.

Hope that it is not too loud for your band or your neighbours.

Exactly, 6C provide nice sound but it is easily get tired since I have to open my mouth widely.

hi saxdog,

唔好意思,有一個幾傻o既問題,希望問下你.
點解你開頭用4c, 之後又會揀番yamaha 6c?
有無試過或者係考慮過其他牌子呢?

Because it is Okay in quality and the price is reasonable (HK160) for one piece.

Hi saxdog,

I like it, I mean the attitude:

"Okay in quality and the price is reasonable."

I love to experiment and try things out. In fact I planned to buy and try all Rico sax mpc models with different openings and chamber sizes (at $145 a peice) ..... only that the mpcs are not avialable. I have an A3 Rico clarinet mpc (small chamber and small opening, for easy soft classical music) for around $100 and it was quite OK, comparable to the yamaha C mpcs.
