Subject: Otto Link Tenor Metal mpc @ TST Tom Lee

Hi all,

First of all I would like to say that I am totally not part of the sales team and nowhere you can find me in the executive list inside the Tom Lee stores. I am just a another frequent customer just like everybody else =)

The sole purpose of this post is just to share my excitement in finding/buying a high quality current production otto link tenor metal mouthpiece. I personally recommend all tenor players out there to check out the remaining pieces they have (of course the best in the batch is now in my possession!) The two left at Tom Lee are actually the re-produced NY Model by the Babbit factory and before today my judgement was totally influenced by the personal experience and websites opinion about how stuffy and how unworthy they are. However forunately I was going to try out the refrence 36 and the earthtone today at the store (I must say I am rather disappointed at them) and I decided to try out the Otto Link pieces they show me and I am really surprised at what I was playing. To the best of my knowledge there are two left (7* and 8*) I gotta say it is a really good buy and it's still definitely a good idea just to give it a try if you are not planning to pay for a new mouthpiece!

FYI, I like this mouthpiece I bought than my Florida Link which I already thought it's pretty good

I've tried all the available tenor metal mpc in Tom Lee. Otto link is marvelous for its flexibility in supporting soft mellow tone as well as edgy sound. Even the other brands including Selmer could not be that satisfying. I would want to buy one for I play different musical genres. But the greatest problem comes from the design of my Yanagisawa saxophone - the inner diameter of the mpc is too large for the cork of the neck piece! So far I've been using Yanagisawa metal mpc, although it serves me well I want to explore some other possibilities. Do U have any other good suggestions for flexible tones?

steve,

you can always readjust the thickness of the neck cock for any mouthpieces, just bring your neck and the mouthpiece to any technicians in HK and they can do the job for you in 15 mins. Yanagisawa makes pretty good metal pieces, but I am more impressed with their soprano mouthpieces (of course, that's my personal opinion). For flexible tones, I would really recommend you trying some dukoffs out there, they are great mouthpieces but at the same time inheriting the same otto link problem of the unstable quality, it's really hard to find a good one out there but if you do, I can assure you you will be more than satisfied with it.

I personally settled on a dukoff after spending a good amount of time looking for the 'perfect' alto piece. The lesson I learned is that you can pretty much play almost any 'music genres' of music with a mouthpiece that is right for you.
