I am praising the author! I think AU did a marvelous job.

AU anticipated the response of readers and used it to great effect. I much prefer an author who knows her audience, responds to her audience and works with the natural reactions of her intended audience. That's what AU did here. And that's quite a skill.

I don't happen to share your assumptions. I don't assume that Michael has good intentions. And so, for me, the story leads to entirely different conclusions than it does for you. The story is skillfully written in such a way as to allow that to happen. That should not be seen by you or anyone as an attack on the author.
