Walter and Birkoff paced the hallway outside medlab, their gazes shifted nervously toward the double doors waiting for any news of Nikita’s condition.
“What if she loses the baby?” Birkoff asked as he slowly took a seat.
Walter turned and glared at him. “Don’t even think about that! If Michael ever finds out.....” Walter stopped.
Birkoff’s eyes widened considerably as Walter mentioned Michael. He slowly lowered his gaze to the floor and sighed.
“He’s really dead isn’t he Walter?” Birkoff asked softly.
Walter felt his heart constrict at those words. “Yeah kid, Michael’s gone. Now it’s up to us to protect Nikita and his children.”
Suddenly the doors slammed open and a young man quickly walked toward them. Walter grabbed the man and slammed him against the wall making Birkoff jump.
“How are my sugars?”
The young doctor stared wide eyed at Walter. Shaking softly he raised his hands and placed them on Walter’s. Slowly he pushed Walter’s hands away from him and straightened his shirt.
“Operations is-“
“Her name is Nikita.” Birkoff and Walter stated in unison.
The doctor shifted his wide eyed gaze between the men. Nodding softly. “Of course, Nikita and the baby are doing fine.”
Walter stepped closer to the doctor. “But?”
The doctor blinked several times wondering if the older man could read minds. Frowning softly he nodded. “But; she’s not responding and labor has started. We do not have the capabilities to deal with a premature labor inside section.” Brushing his hands through his disheveled light blond hair he stared deeply into Walter’s eyes. “I’d suggest we move her to a private hospital, one that can handle this type of emergencies.”
Birkoff stepped closer. “Why don’t we have the capabilities? I personally made sure all medical personnel were trained in maternity medical emergencies, besides
we have everything in place for any emergency.”
The doctor shook his head. “I have been denied access to the medical personnel and facilities inside sub-level 29. Unless either of you has the proper codes there is nothing-“
Birkoff sighed and quickly turned away. “Give me five minutes.” he said and quickly rushed to comm.
Walter smiled softly at the doctor. “You’re new here right?”
The doctor nodded slowly. “Yes; I was transferred from section four to one seven weeks ago. Name’s Frank, Frank Wallace.” He said and extended his hand.
Walter shook it. “Can I see my sugar?” He asked softly.
Frank smiled and nodded. “Of course this way....”
Walter looked at the younger man and smiled. “Walter, just call me Walter.”
Frank smiled once again. “Fine, Walter this way.” He stated and quickly took Walter to Nikita’s private room.
“I’ll return shortly.” Frank said and slipped away down the hallway.
Walter distractedly nodded, his gaze riveted on the door before him. He lifted a shaking hand and slowly pushed the white door open. Forcing his feet to walk he slowly stepped into the room and gasped. On a bed, covered by a single white sheet, Nikita laid inert and unmoving, eyes closed. He felt his chest ache at the sight and closed his eyes, frowning as a memory of Nikita’s smile floated before his closed lids. Opening his eyes once again he sighed. He stepped closer to the bed and noticed that her left hand was softly placed upon her enlarged abdomen.
“Sugar, Please fight, I don’t want to lose you baby.” he whispered softly as he leaned over and placed a soft kiss upon her cheek.
Nikita frowned and mumbled something, Walter leaned closer to her but could not understand what she said. “Come on Sugar, I know you’re hurting but you need to come back, Adam and this little one need you.” he said as he softly placed his hand over her own upon her abdomen.
Nikita whimpered. Her frown deepening she turned her head toward him and sighed. Walter felt his heart break at the pain filled expression upon her delicate features.
Walter wanted to be able to comfort his sugar, but deep down he knew that the only man who had ever been able to get close enough to her was Michael, unfortunately Michael was somewhere in the middle east, dead as far as they knew.
Walter could not shake the feeling that Michael was not dead, that somehow the younger man had survived. Shaking his head he pushed those thoughts aside. “He’s gone Walter, and it’s not good to harbor hopes that can possibly destroy a soul.” He whispered as he slowly took a seat beside Nikita.
Taking her hand into his, he slowly lifted it to his lips and kissed her pale knuckles. “Sugar please wake up, fight for your children. Adam and this little one here need you badly. I can’t be a grandfather and run section at the same time. Please sugar, let me see those beautiful baby blue eyes of yours.” he whispered against her cold skin.

Meanwhile in Comm Birkoff was pounding the hell out of his keyboard trying to get Sub-Level 29 open and it’s medical personnel prepared.
“Come on, I did this myself just two months ago. It’s got to work.” He mumbled as he tried every code that he knew about. Finally the screen flashed. ** acess granted ** Birkoff gave a loud whoop. Then he sheepishly turned and found every operative close by staring at him like he had grown a second head.
“Get back to work!” He stated and quickly transferred all the information into a PDA, then quickly jumped out of his chair, rushing back toward medlab.
Once he entered medlab, he quickly found Nikita’s room and pressed the button to call the doctor. “Doctor, prepare everything to transfer Nikita to Sub-level 29 immediately.” he stated into the intercom.
Walter smiled as he watched Birkoff take command of the situation. Feeling proud that the gentle computer geek that he had watched grow up was slowly feeling more comfortable with his own power inside section.
Walter was stunned to feel Nikita squeeze his hand. He turned and stared into her pale blue eyes. “Sugar?”
Nikita stared dazedly at Walter for several minutes.
“Walter? What happened?” she asked as she tried to sit up.
Walter immediately placed a hand upon her shoulder and forced her back down. “Sugar don’t worry. I’m just glad you’re awake.”
Nikita frowned. “Where’s Michael?”
Walter felt his throat close. Swallowing hard he slowly lifted her hand to his lips and placed a soft kiss upon her palm. “He’ll be here soon sugar.” He whispered.
Nikita stared at Walter, the frown upon her forehead becoming more pronounced. “Don’t lie to me Walter, he’s not coming back because he’s dead.” She said so softly that he could barely hear her.
Walter felt tears sting his closed lids as Nikita slipped her hand from his. “Sugar-“
Nikita sighed. “Walter just bring me Adam please.” She whispered and turned her back to him.
Birkoff entered the room and rushed toward the bed. “How is she?”
Walter lowered his gaze and shook his head. “She’s better, I’ve got to go get Adam.”
Birkoff nodded and tenderly brushed his finger down Nikita’s arm. “I’ll stay with her Walter.” Birkoff whispered.
Walter felt the weight of the world upon his shoulders. He did not know how to deal with so much sadness. Michael was presumed dead, Nikita was extremely depressed and about to give birth prematurely. And he knew that within the hour
someone from Oversight would arrive to take over section one temporarily. The older man sighed and pressed the heel of his hands against his burning eyes.
“If there was some way to make sure Michael was dead, but how? “ he though, allowing his mind to search for ways to find Michael. Walter slowly made his way toward Nikita’s private suite where Adam stayed while Michael and Nikita worked.
Outside the room, Frank Wallace stood watching as Walter walked down the hallway. Sighing at the devastated look upon the older man’s face, Frank knew that he would do anything to keep both mother and child alive. He turned as a nurse stepped closer to him.
“We have everything ready doctor Wallace, we must transfer Operations to Sub-Level 29 immediately.”
Frank nodded and stepped aside, watching as the nurse and two assistants quickly entered the room and wheeled Nikita out and toward the elevators. Birkoff stepped out of the room and approached Frank.
“What’s the prognosis Doc?”
Frank inhaled sharply and stared deeply into Birkoff’s dark brown eyes. “The baby is almost three months premature, if we can stop the labor there is a chance for the baby. But we must also try to keep Nikita calm.” he shifted his gaze as Walter entered medlab. “If she stays calm and does not become suicidal there is a good chance that both will be fine, but if Nikita continues to be.....”
Walter and Birkoff glared at the doctor. “What will happen if Nikita becomes suicidal?” Birkoff asked.
Frank sighed. Running his hands down his face he tried to explain. “If Nikita gets even more depressed she could slip into a catatonic state. Besides, since she is Operations she could be canceled once the new Operations arrives.” he looked at both men. “We all know that this is not what section one is about, babies and pregnant operatives are not a part of section. I believe that the only reason that Nikita was even allowed to continue like this is due to the high numbers section one has.”
Walter nodded slowly. “That’s true, Remember that George was not too happy when he found out Nikita and Michael got married, or that Michael had canceled Operations and Madeline after the Gelman process was destroyed and Nikita was safe. George will take advantage of the situation but I doubt he would cancel Nikita. There is something strange about her recruitment.”
Birkoff nodded and sighed. “Yes, we all know that she was innocent, even Michael knew the moment she killed to save his life. But......why don’t we worry about Nikita and the baby first. I’ve got section on lock down for now until we find out what went wrong on the Ashantari mission. No one will be able to enter or leave until the process is completed. George won’t even be able to bring in anyone. So let’s concentrate on Nikita.”
Walter smiled, proud of Birkoff. Nodding he looked toward the elevators. “Yeah let’s take care of my sugars.” He stepped passed Birkoff and Frank and quickly entered the elevators. Birkoff and Frank Wallace quickly followed.
