Shantal jumped in front of Gadari, clasping his left hand and pushing Michael behind her.

“No! That’s not the way!”

Gadari stared at her, he watched incredulous as Shantal placed herself in front of Michael, risking harm to protect the man.

“Shantal he’s out of his mind!” Gadari shouted. “Look at him and tell me what else besides knocking him out will calm him.”

Shantal turned slowly, her fingers clutched around Michael’s shaking hand. Her gaze roamed the man sitting behind her. He stared straight ahead, his beautiful Jade green eyes glazed and unfocused.

Turning she slowly shook her head. “Beating him up is not the solution. Maybe if I speak to him-“

Gadari reached out and grabbed Shantal by the shoulders. Shaking her softly he tried to force her to understand.

“This man is lost inside his mind, nothing besides a good, long sleep will bring him under control. What do you want to do?”

Shanatl shook her head. “You can’t simply hit anyone who is not responding as we want them to, he’s been under a lot of stress, drugs and who knows what Rahine did to him.” A soft smile spreading on her face as she felt Michael’s hand
tighten convulsively around hers. “Besides, who knows exactly what else he has suffered. All I have heard about him comes from women who don’t know him well. I’ve heard he is violent, cold and uncaring. But so far all I have seen is tenderness and fear. His senses are not fully coherent and he knows it.” She took one more look behind her.

“Besides.....Rahine’s sister is dead, by his hand I’ve been told-” Shantal watched as Gadari’s gaze widened, she felt Michael’s hand release it’s hold on hers and slowly reached out to clasp over Gadari’s hands on her shoulders.

Shantal tried to turn but felt Michael’s stiff body standing behind her, so close that she could feel his heartbeat.

“Let her go!” A soft whisper emanated from Michael.

Gadari blushed bright red and snatched his hands away, taking a step back he slowly lowered his gaze and crossed his arms in front of his chest.

“Forgive me-“ Gadari began only to be stopped by a kick to his chin that made him collapse dazed to his knees.

Shantal jerked away as soon as Michael left her side. She watched as Michael stood above Gadari, his hands fisting and un-fisting as he glared daggers at the fallen man.

“Michael.....” Shantal softly called.

Michael straightened his spine and slowly turned his gaze toward her. “Did he hurt you?” He asked emotionless.

Shantal shook her head slowly. “No, he was only trying to help. Please Michael come here.” She reached out her hand palm up, hoping that Michael would take it in his own.

Michael’s gaze shifted between Gadari who was still kneeling and a bit disoriented, Shantal’s hand and her eyes. Slowly Michael took a step toward Shantal, his gaze meeting and penetrating her own, seeking her hidden soul.

Shantal shivered slightly as Michael’s gaze froze her in place, her hand began to shake softly as he approached her. Michael noticed this and reached out, clasping her hand with his.

“Don’t be afraid please.” He whispered as he stopped just in front of her.

Shantal shook her head, lowering it to hide her embarrassment at her reactions. Michael reached out and gently placed his thumb under her chin, lifting her face to
meet his eyes. They stood frozen, staring deeply into each others eyes until Gadari coughed softly.

“If you don’t need anything else Lalla, I’ll be outside.” He stated.

Michael turned his deadly glare toward Gadari making him shiver softly. Shantal gently squeezed his hand and smiled as Michael turned to look down at her once again.

“Thank you Gadari, will you have someone bring food and refreshments please.”

Gadari nodded and bowed quickly, turning he opened the door and exited. His hands cold and clammy as he closed the door.

“I better stay away from him, or he’ll kill me with one finger.” He thought as he slowly walked down the hallway toward the kitchen.

~*~*~*~*~*

Shantal sighed as Michael brushed his thumb across her lower lip. Her eyes drifted closed and she swayed closer to him.

“Did he hurt you badly?” His voice a breathless whisper.

Shantal opened her eyes and shook her head. “He’ll never harm me Michael, it was you he wanted to help, but I hate his definition of HELP.” She stated, stepping closer to him.

Michael closed his eyes as a shiver made its way down his spine. He stiffened and snapped his eyes open, his gaze roaming the entire room. Frowning softly he turned his gaze back to Shantal.

“Where am I?”

Shantal sighed. Reaching out to touch his cheek with her fingers she gently brushed a stray curl off his cheek.

“What do you remember?”

Michael’s frown deepened. Slowly he searched her eyes, his mouth opening and closing as he tried to remember. After several minutes he sighed and slowly sank to the floor. Shaking his head with an expression of bewilderment he tightened his grasp around her hand.

“Nothing.....absolutely nothing!” He shakily whispered.

Shantal nodded and slowly sank to the floor beside him. She gently clasped his hand between hers.

“What do you mean nothing? You don’t remember how you got here? What happened or.....” She shook her head and sighed. Lifting her gaze to meet his, she slowly uttered the words she feared would come true since Onnia had ordered her to give him more drugs. “You don’t remember anything that has happened in your life?”

Michael lifted his still shaking hand to his temple and pressed softly. Staring dazedly toward the garden, he slowly shook his head. “ Don’t remember anything. "I-“ he groaned and doubled over as a sharp pain cursed through his body.

Shantal quickly embraced Michael and tried to offer comfort. “Tell me what you remember.” she asked softly.

Michael trembled softly in her embrace, his hands grasping her delicate silk camisole. He closed his eyes and slowly forced the pain to recede. The effort caused him to sweat profusely.

Shakily Michael lifted his gaze to meet Shantal’s. Taking several deep, even breaths he brought the pain under control and sighed. Shantal gently reached out and wiped the sweat off Michael’s forehead. He covered her hand with his as she gently cupped his cheek.

“I remember darkness, pain, confusion.” closing his expressive eyes he exhaled sharply. Then......after several minutes his eyes snapped open and he gasped.

“I remember a woman with auburn curls laughing loudly, hands reaching out to touch me, desperation.” his voice broke on that last word and he coughed to clear his closed throat. Closing his eyes once again, he took several deep breaths to calm himself. Then slowly he allowed his eyelids to drift open. “Blonde hair, pale blue eyes, a soft touch, a gentle smile.” He frowned and clutched her hair in his hands.

“Tell me what happened please, why am I here? Where am I?” he asked softly. Fear etched in ever syllable.

Shantal smiled slowly, her hand tightened around his.

“You’re in Egypt Michael, you were brought here to entertain my queen.” She lowered her gaze toward her lap and sighed.

Michael reached out and gently touched her cheek with trembling fingers. “What else?”

Shantal shook her head. “It’s not important Michael.”

Michael gently cupped her cheek. “Yes it is, please tell me.”

Shantal sighed heavily. After several minutes of considering what to tell him she opted for the truth, and with a soft sigh she gently covered his hand with hers on
her pale cheek.

“First I need to know if you remember your name? Where you work, and what you do?”

Michael averted her gaze. “Yes I know what I do, what does that have to do with why I’m here?”

Shantal smiled tenderly. “Andrea and Karen always said you were quick to understand and extremely smart.” She chuckled softly to herself. Lifting her dark gaze to meet Michael’s she gently pulled her hands away from Michael’s grasp.

Michael stared stupefied at Shantal. Shaking his head mentally to clear his thoughts he asked. “How do you know about them?”

Shantal shrugged. “They were brought here, sold or gifted to Jamil.”

Michael’s frown deepened even more. “I thought they were dead.” He whispered softly to himself.

Shantal shook her head. “They lived, both died almost six months ago.” She took a deep breath trying to control the tears that slowly filled her eyes.

Michael nodded slowly. “So you know who I am and what I do?”

Shantal nodded quickly. “Yes I was Andrea’s friend and-“ she stopped herself from confessing her secret. She shook her head and smiled. “You ant to know why you were brought here?”

Michael nodded jerkily. “Please.”

“Our queen desires you Michael, she decided to bring you here and use you, not only to please her but also to procreate.”

Michael sat beside her, stunned speechless. He swayed softly to the right and Shantal reached out to steady him. She felt bereft when Michael pulled way from her and stood abruptly, still unsteady on his feet.

Shantal quickly reached out and grabbed him by the waist.

“Slowly Michael, take it easy. Here lets get you back in bed and warmed up ok?” she gently maneuvered him toward the large silk covered bed.

Michael’s mind raced with the implications. Looking at her he tightened his hold on her hand and stopped walking.

Shantal stopped several steps in front of him. Her dark eyes turning toward him.

“What’s wrong?”

Michael looked up, his eyes were filled with unshed tears. Clasping her ands in his he softly questioned. “Do I have children?”
