I have the very smallest of suggestions. Perhaps you would want to set the entire flashback section aside in italics. To make the differentiation between then and now. But that's just me: I LOVE to use italics. (And have been told, more than once that I overuse them). So perhaps you should just ignore this suggestion.

Your story was beautiful. Exquisite use of language; very spare, but carefully chosen for most effect.

A lovely vignette of Nikita's present mind-set. For me (and me alone), I love it just as it is. I wouldn't change a thing, not a word. It needs no further embellishment.

Again, as I said, JMVHO. But this was very nicely done!
