Fortitude

My arms ache. The chains binding them have held them up too long, too high. Little circulation reaches my fingertips. The spray of water is aimed directly at my face and, despite myself, I close my eyes and turn my head.

He approaches again, the paddles extended to touch my abdomen.

Pain shoots, spreads, clenches around me.

Agony barely begins to describe the sensation. My back arches, perversely thrusting my belly and groin toward the source of my torment.

When he is finished, he steps back and watches my body twitch. I hate that the most. The watching.

As soon as I can draw breath, the question sears my brain. Again.

Why?

I cannot resist the urge to review the last few days. What did I miss? How did she fool me so completely?

Regrets are futile. All fear, all other considerations must be stricken from my mind; I can only focus on waiting and watching. Look for my opening.

My time will come.
